Carnival is just around the corner, March 4th thru 8th. The city itself is going to be DEAD as far regular night time activities.
Joints will be open of course, but you won't see the same activity as the rest of the year, and I bet the pros from habanos, bodeguita, etc are all set with dates for carnival leaving for beaches, the provinces.
So I'll write down some popular destinations, not the most crowded but still very popular.
1. Panama City: if you plan to come or you are schedule to come during this days, there will be some carnival activities in the city, specifically in the coastal way (cinta costera). Be on an escalated state of alert, as tourist become prime targets for robbers, even when there is an increase in police units during the events.
Most hotels might have some artists and the like.
2. Penonome: Try to see if there is a day trip with the hotel to this town, is one of the first major stops for the carnival, about 2 hours from the city. Expect big concentrations of people for the "culecos", big water trucks with hoses attached throwing water to all the attendants while they drink themselves into oblivion under the blistering sun.
Practice good common sense, have copies of your passport, bring just enough cash with you, try to leave most valuables and electronics at your place, since they are bound to get wet (use ziplocs or waterproof packs if your gadget has one).
3. Ocu: about 3 hours from the capital, the crowd here is from the middle upper, upper echelons of society so will have a nicer and relaxed time. Same as above but with a lower alert level. Big gathering of people.
4. Las Tablas: Well worth 4 hours away from the city. This is one of the most crowded places during the carnival. Extreme Opsec is advised, same advices as above regarding valuables, money, etc.
5. Beaches: Nikki Beach, Decameron, your pick. Good luck finding vacancy as many people stay some days at the beach and then go to the above places and back to their hotels.

Just came back from pty and had an absolute horrible time. Been there 4 times and this is by far the worst. Women starting with 150 and hour and only about a handful of women at the veneto, habanos etc. Immigration is scaring these women away. Friday was dead because there was a call that immigration was going to show up. Lots, lots of american people there. I feel that the secret of Panama city is over.
Just saw recent post on 2-23-2011 with not too good news about Panama City. 4/9 to 4/16 are before Easter celebrations so is the town still happening then or getting ready to shut down for upcoming holidays?
I'm heading down March 17th thru the 22nd staying at the torres de alba across the street from the veneto so will give a report when I return.

Like I said from my last trip. Panama city is not Panama city anymore. SAD.
About 25 women, mostly Colombians, were discovered in a "prophylactic" operation offering sexual services in the streets and nightclubs, and not carrying any documentation. Agents of Municipal Surveillance and the Justice of the Peace on duty, Genaro Barcenas, were deployed in various parts of the capital. Everyone heads for the beaches, provinces, etc. Just a few bars open on Saturday, but on most cases the city is deserted

Arrived last night the 17th and staying across the street from the Veneto. Stopped in at the Veneto several times throughout the night and 10 to 20 chicas at any given time.
Walked on down to Habano's and it was business as usual. I'm guessing 30 to 50 chicas.
I'm here for 5 more nights and I just like PC better than san jose, CR. Maybe its a personal preference since I spent some time in the Military here.

Friday March 18th was a different story. A handful of chica's in the Veneto and I counted a total of 4 at Habano's.
Talked to a dominican I took back to my place and she said there was rumor of a bust by immigration so all the girls were staying home.
From what I can tell it will just be hit or miss. Ok I'm out.
Will report more when I get back to the states.
