It used be what was earned in the current tax year where you stayed 180 days or more. Now its what you earned in a previous tax year or the current tax year, just a long as you bring it into Thailand the year you qualify as a tax resident. I can't reveal much to you on here but this is my job, so I know what I am talking about. We don't believe there will be any enforcement when one does a visa extension unless its related to employment and that is already in place. Retirees most likely wont be forced to file. When he went to the government office, they refused to give it to him. The reason they gave him was enforcement. They don't want the extra work to go after foreigners. Believe me. If they target foreigners on this law, do you know how many foreigners will leave and retire elsewhere? Or they will just use a visa agent for their extension, just like they do when they dont have the 800 K or cant prove their income for their extension of stay based on retirement.

So, this year I will stay less than 180 days in Thailand, and then in 2025, I will monitor the situation.

I suspect that the new Thai government may change course on Farang taxation, but anything is possible.
