First time in more than a year that I step into this forum and I stumble on this. I fell for this exact same thing but it was about 4 yrs ago and further south.

I am flying inti ctg in November for two weeks and want to drive to Barranquilla and Santa Marta the car rentals at airport are very expensive does anyone know of other means of renting cars from locals of which I have done in Cali a couple of times.

After dealing with Tony for a few years, I decided to pack a collapsable cooler in my luggage. It holds about ten Aguillas with ice. Now Tony comes up to me begging for a beer. I swap him a couple for half price on the chair. Probably still overcharged for the chair though.

Despite what the last two posters say, Tony is a good guy, and you can have alot of fun with him, just like MJG Dogs and I did when we were in Tony's section in September, and we both have on many occasions. (I am sure MJG Dogs will agree with me) The guy is a character and alot of fun. He can be a real asset to anyone who is looking for some daytime action. He has many contacts, and he will work his ass off to get you the type of girl you are looking for. Furthermore, if you see a girl on the beach you are attracted to, even if it is a non working girl, just tell him you are interested in meeting her, and 9 out of 10 times he will get her for you. He is very good at what he does.

Yes he will try to get as much money out of you as he can, but his JOB IS SERVICING the needs of the people on the beach, so who can fault him for getting what he can. This is how he pays his rent, puts food in his mouth, e.t.c. It is up to the people who are desiring service on the beach to know the cost of the carpas, chairs, beer, soda, e.t.c.

If he asks you to buy him a beer, big deal. Is one or two beers at the cost of $2 or $3.00 dollars going to break your bank?. It is worth this little bit of change for the entertainment he provides. He also keeps an eye on your belongings if you go into the ocean e.t.c., and this is very nice because you do not have to worry about your belongings being stolen.

For anyone who will be enjoying the beach in Cartagena, I highly suggest you find his area on Playa Hollywood. You will be entertained continuously, and you will have alot of fun with him. He is also not a pest. He stops by your chair or carpas from time to time to check if you need anything but that is it. This is no different than a waiter/waitress would do if you were in a restaurant or bar. Look at him as an asset, and not the greedy asshole that Malodr claims, as that is not the way he is. He is really a nice guy.

Except for Tony and high season, the carpas are 2k and the chairs are 1K.

Tony and I get along fine. I buy nothing and rent nothing from him. I have, on rare occasion, sampled a chica that he introduced. But I tipped him nothing, that is the chica's responsibility. And she has to tip Tony whether or not you do.

Just know the going rates and negotiate in advance so there´s no misunderstandings later.

He doesn't mind if you call his bluff, if he's asking for too much, just tell him what you´re willing to pay.

I had a chica, I paid her 50,000 and Tony got that chica for my friend and he paid 150,000.

I was on the beach with Urbanwildlife. However my take is a little different on Tony. He can be helpful If you know how to play him. He is greedy and if your smart and patient you can use that greed to your advantage. Especially during slow times.

I agree with Malodr I also negotiate withe the chica directly, behind Tony's back. Sure I let Tony introduce women to me, but when he does, I seem always disinterested, however later if I am interested, I will approach the chica on my own.

I do like to jew the fuck out of Tony down on shit, it is part of the game. Sometimes I get Tony pissed off at me, which I enjoy at times.

I've spent a lot of time camped out near Mamma Rosa's fruit stand which to those of you in the know is where they have the hooker tent. The hooker tent is where the massage girls and street walkers who religiously work playa hollywood hang out. These girls are usually locals, and not so mint, . But usually very cheap. There are pretty much two types of higher calibre hookers that show up from noon or so on. The ones who work dolce vita and are lookin for an extra trick or to take another shot at the retarted idiot who got drunk and threw his money around with them last night (me). The other type are girls who for some strange reason only work the beach, . They'll come in from barranquilla or where ever work on their tan alone or with a girlfriend until they get a trick and be home by dark. You'll see some rare jems who only ever seem to show up on the beach. These girls almost exclusively arrange their chairs and carpas with Tony. You'll see him greet them and you'll see him setting them up in a carpa almost as if he is the un-disputed pimp of these girls.

The problem with Tony is that because he's one of the few who speaks english and has a rep for getting girls he specializes in attracting and fleecing un suspecting newbie gringos. It's painful and embarrassing watching all the regulars and the vendors snikering and laughing at some new gringo buying lunches and coconut drinks for hookers in a tony tent and Tony laughing at them behind their backs with his gold riddled grin.

A self-respecting veteran of Cartagena in my humble opinion owes it to himself and the reputation of other gringos in the know and he MUST say "FuK U tony number 1! No tent no drinks but DO send over your girls! "

I'm in Cartagena now and just left Tony on la playa on a rainy later afternoon. Put me in the camp that likes Tony, but does not especially enjoy the hassle of correcting his accounting and math almost every time.

Tony, at least with me, typically over counts the number of beers, etc. , and wants to inflate the price to include the amount of propina he needs for the day. If he's had a good day with many customers, he typically doesn't attempt to extract a grossly inflated amount. Conversely, when he's not made what he needs for the day, he usually comes up with an amount that is about double I'm ready to give him.

For example, today he quotes me 80 mil when I had about 40 mil in my mind, including tip. He re-cites what I had, overcounting and inflating the price to arrive at his 80 mil. I hand him 50 mil and tell him he made mucho propina off me today. By my count, he probably got around 20 mil propina from me today on the 50 mil.

I do know that Tony then gives his "runners" some dinero for bringing the beers, etc. , and then pays for the beers, chairs, etc. He makes his cut for providing the service and putting you in the middle of the action.

I agree that Tony will walk up to any chica that you are interested in, including chicas he's never seen before and more times than not, the chica is then sitting next to you within 5-10 minutes.

So I ended-up tipping Tony less than $10 bucks. It really isn't all that bad, it's just the hassle of arriving at the end result that can be a turn off. I didn't have to get-up for anything, except the occasional trip to drain the weasel.

When I want something, it is brought to me pronto. Where I come from, that type of service deserves tipping. Again, it's the just the way Tony attempts to determine what his tip should be from me on any given day that becomes daily ritual that I have to hurdle.

I've told him on more than one occassion that he'd be better off giving me the true count of items and price and let me add-on his tip. This past Saturday I went as far as telling him that if he kept insisting on his price for the day, I'd pay it and never, ever give him another dime. That day he quoted me 110 mil and I walked him thru several times what I had times the price. We settled at 68 mil.

His attempt at an extra 42 mil from the start is again the hassle. I think most of us prefer to pay the true price and then add-on what we are willing to tip. Yes, I know that it typically comes down to only $10-$20 that we're talking about, but when you go the la playa 10 or so days during a two week stay in Cartagena, it can add up to several extra sessions with the chicas, LOL.

I'm here for another week and will probably see Tony tomorrow, LOL. Let me know if you have any words you want me to pass on to him. Other than "fok u". I'm just not much for shouting out F-bombs in public, regardless of whether the people around me speak English or not.
