There are cameras, police always somewhere nearby, it's location is near touristy and normal shopping area and one of the main public transport hubs, with bunch of locals going about their business all day until 6-8 pm, scores of street vendors, without major gang fighting taking place (but with drug sellers, occasional pickpockets, snatch and runs, scams, beggars, homeless, addicts, drunks and with fights sometimes breaking out where the knives appear, but I'm yet to see a gun in centro). One still has to be aware of the surroundings but I don't have a feeling as if they 'hunt gringos' there (I didn't run into any major issues mongering solo there, if anything I feel more on edge in the more affluent less crowded areas of the city). Any insight how does Rio street scene compare to that?

Its kinda loud and smokey and a bit dark but I've found the best girls here in all my visits to rio! They open at 11 so you can see if you find someone you like but it doesn't get packed until 12:30 so it's a real coin toss.
