What it all comes down to is this: wear shorts in a gogo, get a HJ. Wear pants in a gogo, get blue balls. HJ wins every time.
unless there is really nothing for tourists to see there. The later is why Jakarta is still such a great place for mongering. Unless I had a job there I would not choose to live there, as there is not a lot to do. But for gals at all price levels, it is hard to beat.
Everything I hear about Jakarta is it's a horrid place relative to BKK. High HIV rate in PFP, for one.
"Let's be honest: There are some cities in the world that are worse much worse than others, cities from which a multitude would flee if offered half a chance to relocate elsewhere. Lagos comes to mind, as do Karachi, Lima, Nairobi, Cairo, Caracas, Dhaka, Jakarta, Manila. These are utterly charmless cities (such charm as there once was in a few of them has been murdered by noise, traffic, a teeming population, dirt and crime); these are edgy, aggressive and inhospitable cities, cities in which contempt for the resident is everywhere apparent, cities with few parks and sidewalks, and with scarcely any of the amenities that comprise the core of urban civilization. As for various price levels, you can find that all over the world. In generally expensive Canada I can get ladies of the street as cheap as in BKK.

I've been to Jakarta a couple of times. Not great but certainly not terrible. Try Central and South Jakarta. South Jakarta is clean, modern, wide roads, etc. Lots of moola in both Central and South. And if you're worried about HIV, use condoms.
Canadian streetwalkers? Ugh. I'm from Montreal and I live near the infamous Jarvis / Church St. Stroll in TO. You cannot pay me enough to go near those "women".
One picture is worth a thousand words. Enough said.
To Phordphan who said No, I live in the slobocracy of SoCal endquote. Well, congratueffinlations. I 'm on the other end of the state now where we don't care what other people wear either. Obviously I have never been out of America. All of my 1000+ posts have all been about Northern California, Fix Or Repair Daily. Happy effin New Year in your pants in tropical countries. Geez.
I'm not the sole arbiter of wearing short pants, the entire population of Thailand is.
IMO:
Shorts well below the knee = the style for Thai men.
Shorts at or just below the knee = borderline.
Shorts above the knee = you will stick out like a sore thumb.
None of this applies to the ladies; as their cigar-band sized shorts are always in fashion.
YMMV.

Buddha does not want to see anyone's legs.

Of course even the worst of the worst cities always have some areas that are better than others.
"If Jakarta want to keep the worst traffic and flood prone city in SE Asia, their business. LOL".

"Armed robberies are reported regularly and criminals are increasingly using weapons. Petty crime, including pick pocketing, bag snatching, and forced cash withdrawals from automated banking machines (ABMs), remains a serious concern. Keep car doors locked and windows rolled up at all times. Use reputable taxis from major hotels or book in advance by phone. ".

About 20 percent of Canadian hobbyists use street walkers there. Not everyone can afford or wants to pay the generally high local prices & quite a few of the girls are stunners. They also may offer a wider menu & are much more into kissing than Bangkok ladies. I've saved myself many thousands in USD using their services.
Use condoms? I might rather stay home & wank.
Naturally, it's a religious shrine. Buddha does not want to see anyone's legs.
Syzygies raised the question of whether or not shorts were allowed in temples. I reported what I saw. Seems obvious to me to dress respectfully when entering a temple. I guess those two tourists thought of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha as a tourist attraction. Sometimes I marvel at how the Thais put up with us.

But, more to the point, tropical or not, can you show a few examples, based on your 1000+ posts, of countries you've visited where shorts are the norm for adult men? I'll give you Bermuda.
Now, most of my 1600+ posts (I can play that game, too), concern activities in tropical countries, or at least hot countries. And, as I stated before, it's difficult to find a place where shorts are the norm for adult males, outside of the beach. Without getting your panties into another wad, just name a few. I'm certainly open to being educated.
BTW, that's First On Race Day. :)

Jakarta is one of the last great places for p4 p left. Good attitudes a wide variety of prices. And Indonesian chicks are great performers.
There are sex workers who are hardened mercenaries who only care about your money. Especially in Bangkok I've encountered many sex workers who like being out with a man who has made an effort to look good for them and treat them nicely. My experiences are a woman who has managed to retain her natural femininity is conditioned to try harder to please a man who acts like a gentleman and tries to make the evening fun for her. Woman like to dress up. The woman I do outcalls with fix up with fresh makeup and a nice sexy dress; and they smile favorably when they see I've taken the effort to shower, shave, put on a nice aftershave balm and dress nicely.
But as they ladies say, "Up to you. ".
A friend told me something he heard from another monger years ago and I think it fits. "Its always about the money, but its not always only about the money. " That fits Thai p4 p gals to a tee.
I went to the Grand Palace one afternoon in November. I observed a couple of guys with shorts sternly told they had to cover their legs before they could enter the Wat Phra Si Rattanasadaram.
Unfortunately they are practising hypocrisy as the rules for Dress for Farangs are stricter than for the local Thais at the Grand Palace. A westerner could dress the same as a Thai and be considered disrespectful, where the Thai person isn't. Clear racial discrimination based on the assumption that Farangs are dirty and smelly, or perhaps purely a money making measure to force Farangs to pay a charge to borrow some shoes and socks for example. I was refused entry to whole Palace tour for wearing sandals where the locals were all wearing sandals. My sandals were "disrespectful".
