I've been living in PI (MNL) for only a few months now, so still on a steep learning curve...therefore I could use a few expert minds to answer a couple of questions:

Situational Question
Was bar hopping on Burgos the other nite with a couple mates and ended up in Dimples. As soon as I walk in, I spot a lovely lass dancing, who also spots me. Eyes meet, smiles... before I know it she is at my side. I buy her a few drinks, we chat, she's a total sweetie, and is very, very friendly. I know she's saving me a big bar fine, so I have no problem paying her (also it's just before x-mas and extra money would definitely be useful for these gals), but not exactly sure if she is expecting to be paid. I was thinking of discreetly putting 2000 or 3000p in her bag and telling her that it's to buy a few presents for her family. Any thoughts?

Manta not a long term expat but coming up on two years. Anyway man working girl or not I always give them money. That money I can spend in one or two nights just on drinks goes a long way. I'm a decent spender and even I think Burgos is terribly expensive IMHO, overpriced and the girls know this. should i interpret it that there is no way it could be legal to have sex with a 16 year old even if it is not commercial? of course it is another thing how you define a commercial relationship, if you buy your girl meals someone could think you have paid for sex even if it is not 100% true.

Not so much in the Philippines. Girls aren't valued there the same way they are in western cultures. Fathers and brothers often try to push their daughters and sisters off on foriegners for monetary gain.

Interesting concept but its very simplistic.

It would be more correct to see their daughters and sisters as an commodity, one of the few commodities that foreigners want and you would offer this commodity to the highest bidder, which would be a foreigner.
