I would say that a first year IT student in Scandinavia is better equipped than a person that just finished his "degree" in Mindanao. I have interviewed / tested, and in some cases hired & fired, all from programming teachers and an assisting professors to self educated home hackers, and the only pattern I see in indicating some sort of reliability when it comes to production, quality and capacity to deliver, is purely coincidental and never related to the education itself. Without a large portion of self motivation, you will end up as an Internet Café attendant after 4-5 years in university, unless some private entrepreneur decides to train you. Last trip to Pi I sat down with the two head responsible for the software development education in one of the universities that produce the "best" students considering the results of the national tests and national programming competitions. These guys lacked the most fundamental understanding of most things we discussed (except the part where I would sponsor the University with Android phones for free development of whatever I wanted). I am not talking advanced and abstracts concepts, but simple and down to earth topics such as as why it is good to separate the one day signalling theory "course" from the application development "course" in the telecommunication curriculum. These areas of knowledge normally will actually define what type of engineer you are going to be, but these air heads had selected some sporadic topics and mixed it into their generic telecommunication course. The equivalent would be something like having a doctor studying a morning of psychiatry followed by an afternoon of brain surgery, and then give him a license to do both. Simply frightening to think that these guys have a say about anything that has to do with anything. I now have zero confidence in the educational system of the Philippines, simply because a vast majority of the 100+ engineers / developers I worked with and / or tested did not have skills that would even measure with an average developer of my home country. A few are good, but this is normally a result of self motivation and training at home, together with a huge doze of "on the job"-training after graduation. Any engineer mus ask the question "why?". A "why?" was rewarded in the Pi with a whip or a bullet for the last 400 years and nowadays the concept of providing a facade education for a quick buck is prevalent. What a hopeless situation indeed.

Actually, the standards are dramatically lower, so low in fact that the EU has stopped accepting degrees from most universities here. I work with more than 25 colleges and universities in Mindanao, and I can assure you that the level of scholarship in most would not be acceptable at any university with which I'm familiar in the US. I've reviewed Master's theses here that wouldn't pass as cceptable term papers in high schools i the West. The same goes for many Ph. D. dissertations.

There are lots of reasons for this, but in the end, they all come down to poverty. Universities are poorly funded, even the private schools. The curricula are badly out of date, and the qualifications of many faculty are wholly inadequate. Then too, the Philippines offers only ten years of elementary and secondary education, which means that kids arrive at college-at about age 16-lacking a vital two years of schooling. Universities here also have about the shortest number of classroom hours I've ever seen, with endless class interruptions for such momentous events as "founder's day" or "intramural athletics" or whatever.

I'm not speaking here of Ateneo de Manila, UP Diliman or De La Salle, which stand well apart from the rest, though even these would be considered middle rung universities in the US or Europe.

I was once told by the president of one of the largest university systems in Mindanao that the only faculty "worth a damn" were those who had been trained outside the country, and I believe it. The level of scholarship that many of us take for granted in the places in which we were trained just doesn't exist here. I've seen university libraries that aren't as large as my high school library.

However, the conclusion in either case is the same, whether Master's Thesis or Masters' Theses, the quality is abysmal, but for anyone who has spent time in any classrooms here, that would not be surprising.

Filipinas are desperate to have pointy nosed babies, taller than usual and with light colored skin, even if the hubby is not like this. The first thing they comment when a new baby is born is "he / she has light skin" OR "He/she has a good nose". They dream of having a star basketballer (male) or a show business beauty / model (daughter).

The odds on this result happening are magnified in their minds if the father is a foreigner, hence the relentless pursuit of the caucasian sperm to be inserted into her baby-making factory.

DO NOT believe what she says about support etc. Wrap up Johnny or better still, have the vasectomy and then you can have fun in the shooting range without using live ammunition.

I have noticed more and more girls seem to have braces on their teeth these days.
