On Monday I went to Claro store in Cidade So Paulo shopping mall. The guy wanted BRL 310 for the Sim and some data and he repeated the same price for another gringo too. I took a taxi to Shopping Ibirapuera and got my Sim from Claro paying BRL 10 for the chip and BRL 50 for some data. Surprisingly my old Rio de Janeiro Sim from a year ago was still active, but I had left it at home, because I didn't expect to be able to use it anymore.
The exchange rate is 4.56 today.
Banco do Brasil. I could not take out 1000 R said exceeds my daily max and same message when I tried 800 R. In the past I would get whatever the rate is that day.
Itaś. Did not accept my card from US.
Bredesco. Got 2.46 rate.
Santander. Got 2.36 plus 20 R fee. Which is also a banco24 horas.
I am irritated that the ATMs don't notify you what the exchange rate is like credit card machines do when making a purchase it gives you the exchange rate in USD or BR.

On the first floor the gift shop use to sell sim also. I find it strange unlike other international airports there are many SIM card vending machines or mobile company selling SIM cards.
I ended up with Claro for 10 R per week with 2 gb or 35 R per month with 6 gb.
Might be a good time to visit.

In all of these cases though, it means you are about to get fucked. Do not okay it and it will revert to giving you the rate that it is supposed to.

I had very hard time trying to get a sim in Rio. I tried several places mentioned on tripadvisor including two malls but was turned down everywhere because I didn't have Brazilian ID. Someone later on told me that I can get the ID from a place near Copacabana beach.
I would love to know how to get a sim in Rio.

You don't need a CPF to use a brazilian SIM card. It might be easier to activate it using a CPF, but as said it's not necessary. Btw, You can get a CPF as a tourist, it can be useful if you stay in Rio longer periods. You can get client cards at Zona Sul, Pao de Acucar etc and get good discounts.

All you need is your [B]Passport[/B] if your a tourist (Brazilian ID or CPF card not necessary) to get a sim card. Go to Rio Sul mall ([URL]https://www.riosul.com.br/[/URL]) walkable right outside the Tunnel (Tunel do Leme Galeria Coelho Cintra) via Av. Princesa Isabel. Never had a problem getting Sim from either Claro or TIM in mall, they deal with tourist everyday. Claro and Tim each have two stores on different floors. It did happen where I for example went to TIM on 3rd floor and they sent me to the store on the 1st floor. Either way never refused a SIM purchase and related service (top-off minutes / data / etc).
