You would need something as a backup like the taxis outside the right exit of the train station. I am not speaking from a lot of experience because I am tourist or let's say high class traveling handsome business man.

Download CITYMAPPER. The map / transport app is more user friendly than Google maps and easier to manage public transport options.
Download and set up FreeNow the taxi app. Worth it when Uber is not working. And pretty sure it's a crap shoot at Darmstadt.
Third my memory is a bit fuzzy but I believe Darmstadt Nord is the closer and walkable train stop. And maybe buses run from there.
I've always found taxis available BTW but always have a plan be.
