Oaxaca is a great tourist destination but I had bad luck with the hobbly. I visited the Casa Azul but only one one woman was working, a tia named Fabi that did not appeal. I lived there and Guanajuato in the the (barren) winter months of 2014. I can attest there is absolutely nothing there. The gringos who live there are the older retired types and virtually no backpackers travel in this area -- it's just too expensive. There are no crazy cantinas, absolutely no strip joints, and I never heard of any burdels (bordellos). By midnight, the sidewalks are rolled up.

The Jack Kerouac / Neal Cassiday days are but a distant memory.

The only thing in its favor is nice winter weather and temps.

Bring a good book or plenty of DVD's.
