I think you're trying to find a pattern of the higher price places being safer. But I don't agree.
First, the sex is worse, and the major problem with the rich world is deaths of despair. So, if you get 'fucked' out of your well earned dollars by 15 minutes for a shower, only covered sex, checking tests for 10 minutes so an hour is actually like 10 minutes of covered sex then is that really safer? I was attacked by like 10 guys outside of a prive at Metro Sans Pena, that was 12 years ago. Eventually, they got me down, and stole the phone on which I was recording the incident. The video auto backed up to google photos and I still have it. So again, don't take video or pictures without authorization. Pretty simple.
This is a dangerous hobby. Fighting Fucking and Football -- Brazilian culture in summary. If you're older or not in fighting training, make friends with wingmen with some of those characteristics. If you want friends, be a a friend. Etc.

I think I can understand Senor Vagabondo's safety concerns, if not outright obsession. It is a violent city and if you live there 365, the odds are you will become a victim of crime at one point in your life. Can't beat the math. But the rest of us are short-term visitors. In over 20 years, a taxi and bird-shit scams (twice in one trip if you can believe that) have been the worst things that happened to me there. Does it mean I've been lucky so far? Maybe, but I also tend not to walk around drunk, wear jewelry, or bring home women who (even slightly) rub me the wrong way. I don't carry more than 200 reais on me unless I need money for hobbying, and when I do I take Uber everywhere.
That said, if I do stumble upon a mugging crew, I'm not going to fight and resist. They can have my $40 and my 2016 Pixel 3 A that doesn't have any apps they could use to steal my money. At least, that's the plan, and I believe a good one. Seriously, Rio is not a war zone, unless you make it about fighting.
One thing Senor Vagabundo is right about is that safety is in numbers. Lowlifes won't target a group of 3-5 sober people. That alone will make your Rio travels much safer. No knives, guns, or Bombeiro shirts are needed, IMHO.
And this would be a good time to mention that I've also been fortunate to be helped and warned countless times by the locals. Cariocas you see and interact with on the streets are not out there to get you.
