I too have few notes of INR 500 and I don't know how to change them. But one must know that no one is allowed to import more than INR 10,000 into Indian territory. So, $2,000 is nearly INR 130,000. I think you will have problems to get them through the Indian Customs at the airport.

Seems the cash booking for airline tickets increased 2-3 times the normal rate after the rule came into picture and is connected in line with the effort to whiten the black money. All the airlines are instructed not to cancel & refund such bookings.
