But even more substantial has been the blitz of technology. 15 years ago girls were lucky enough to have a phone capable of SMS. It was a struggle for her to communicate outside of the bar. The bar as a location was key. The money (punters) went to the honey (working girls). Now any girl fresh from the rice paddies will make her first purchase a smartphone with data, easily accessible for a couple see-notes. And since Line, Facebook, WeChat, Twitter, etc. Are all free and don't need any education to use (think of all the apps that come with translation software embedded too! Working girls have little barriers to moving their business into cyberspace. Why spend your nights doing a lethargic version of the Bangkok two-step or deal with strict rules of the mamasan when you can get your contacts online and wait for business to come to you? And this is where a lot of those cute University girls are going as well. Remember the droves of lower class uni girls that used to go to Nana Disco and other venues on weekends? Again, why bother when you can just broadcast on WeChat and wait for somebody within 2 km to hit on you? This is why we see less and less talented lovelies in the bars and gogos. With mobile technology being where it is, if you are an elementary-educated girl with a good body and face, you just have a better option than hanging out in Nana parking lot or worse working nights in a beer bar or gogo. The bar owners are feeling this as well as high quality girls are harder and harder to keep given that customers can virtually poach them or the girls themselves will find these better options once they learn the enabling technology. And this is working from another angle. Pimps are getting much better with using this. Why open a bar when you can just keep a virtual stable of girls and pimp them as demand comes (there is a guy who seems to be working 3-4 younger girls on CraigsList BKK this way).

And mongers used to (or worse, dependent upon) the old bricks-and-mortar shopping methods are struggling with these changes. Having been to Saigon, Jakarta, Bangkok and Manila in the last 2 years, I can say that the old industrialized model where any Joe Monger could fly in unannounced and go pick a girl off the rack at a bargain price at a wide variety of venues is truly on its way out. Particularly in Asia, the economy doesn't need it, the locals don't want it and the girls don't prefer it. Yes, there are still some sputtering remains, most namely in BKK, MNL and Jakarta, but they are a shadow of their former selves. Two reasons; First and foremost I have a gal that I have lived with for the better part of a decade; so I am damn discreet. Having apps on my phone and having other gals have any information about me is a line that I am not willing to cross. Some of the girls are quite nice but nothing special and the pressure to buy an overpriced plate of fruit and french fries is really annoying. The prices seem reasonable but after you've taken into account all the extras it probably works out the same or more than the farang areas. You're expected to tip the waiting staff 200 baht+ (they sulk if you tip 100) and that applies to Thais and foreigners.

The bar with the nicest girls is called Rainbow (nothing to do with the Nana ones) and is located nearer to Phahonyothin Road. All the waiters are boys who seemed a bit scared of me (even though I speak Thai) but as most of the girls are hiding you really need to talk to those boys to get what you want so I gave up. All in all the area is just too much hassle to waste time with.

On the issue of chat apps, how are you using these to find girls? You need to exchange IDs or numbers first so if you wanted to make contact a second time they would be useful but I can't see how you're using them to find a new girl.
