Maybe this belongs more in a politics thread -- American politics or Brazilian politics -- but frankly, bolsonaro has gotten it right, and I am f'ing glad he is president of the country I have lived in since Covid started.

I just have to say, after having spent 5 weeks in SP & RJ (limited time I know) that I think racial relations in Brazil seemed to be much better / healthier than current racial relations in the USA. It was not always this way, but as of right now, I think that Brazil has much better and more sane relations.

I don't like to talk local politics when I am in a foreign country as a visitor, but the few Brazilians that expressed their political views to me, said they disliked Bolsonaro. I am pretty sure the main reason for their displeasure is Covid, but I am no expert on Brazilian politics. Me, I kind of like the guy for the reasons you posted however. Ha Ha.

When I attended Real Estate school, we had several sessions on "racism". It was all related to Real Estate, obviously, but it was interesting to see how "out of touch" the mostly white class was about what constituted "racism". There were one or two black students and they got every nuance correct whereas the white students got even the basics wrong.

What I learned from that experience was that most white folks don't have a clue about what racism is, primarily because they don't have to live with it every minute of every day. This, of course, is complicated by the fact that most Republicans believe that racism is BS. If Republicans had their way, only white folks would vote. Well, maybe a few black folks too, but only those who owned a business.

That is, unless their latest strategy of simply making it harder for minorities in the big cities and typical Dem areas to vote or have their vote count anyway is so successful in the future there is no reason for them to hire a strategist, say anything or campaign at all.

Prior to the period in question, Democrats were seen as the Party of the working man, and Republicans the Party of the Country Club class. Replacing class consciousness with racial consciousness, or identity, or even outright racism is a desirable outcome for precluding development of a revolutionary outlook, the potential fatal threat to the capitalist system. The political game in America, as has been noted many times, is played between the forty-yard lines.
