Cienega32, it's good to know that EP and Juarez will be on the same time(s) all year. Starting next week, it will be daylight an hour longer in the afternoons in Juarez, making it a tad safer for looking around after work.

Just watched the movie 'Bordertown' on DVD. It's about the murdered and missing young girls who work at the maquiladoras in C Juarez. It was estimated about 5000 were murdered or kidnapped. Their dead bodies are dumped or buried in the desert. I read quite a few investigative reports by US press.
Dont know when it was made. Antonio Banderas and Martin Sheen was in it. It shows some very explicit views of la Zona Roja, lots of street girls in crummy, run down streets, strip clubs, people having sex in wide open VIP booths etc...
It's a serious and very intense movie based on a lot of known facts. Both Jenny Lopez and Antonio Banderas showed lots of passion, intensity and credibility in their roles. I am now convinced they are both serious actors.
A very serious and touching movie, worth watching.
That came out 3 or 4 years ago. Mixed results with people saying it concentrated too much on Lopez's role as the reporter and not enough on the murders and their totals over the years.
Tho' I haven't heard the number being quite as high as 5,000, there are a lot and the main problem seems to be (surprise) the investigatory end of it - or lack there of.
There have been a few movies about this over the last few years but I enjoyed most of this one. Much was shot in Nogales as well.

It is really a story about an immigrant Mexican girl, who at first did not want to do a story about the murders of innocent young girls in Mexico.
Then when she got into it, she empathized with the helplessness of the people and their generations being oppressed by the rich and the powerfuls. She risked her life and dedicated her life for them at the end.
I know a lot of young American women in real life, who left their secured and comfortable lives in the US, dedicated their lives or part of their lives, doing some good for poor and oppressed peoples. We need more role models like these girls in all countries.

In this film, Jelo's role may be fictional but the story is not. It's typical Hollywood's pandering to an audience that only wants to pay to see movie to feel good about themselves. At least a lot of people became aware of the plight of poor young Mexican girls who left their homes to work in the maguiladoras, living in shanty towns, and a bit of the culture and politics of Mexico.

I decided to go to Juarez today after getting off work early. I crossed the border at 3:00 p. M and made my way down Avenida Juarez. I then crossed over to the Mariscal district on the same street where Eduardo's is.
