there's a group of videos on youtube, fantasmas en la ciudad de piedra, that are fascinating if you understand spanish and if you're interested in cartagena. parts 1, 2 and 6 are largely about security and poverty in the city, parts 3 and 4 about prostitution, and 5 is a waste of time. what i learned,
1. we pay too much. the mayor of cartagena knows where to get a blow job for 5, 000 pesos and a piece of ass for 40, 000.
2. while the discoteques (like ldv) screen for age, there are **** streetwalkers, 15,16, 17 years old. i've never picked up a sw there that looked young, but if i did, i'd make damn sure i looked at her cedula first.
3. there was a guy who's a director for a ngo that combats prostitution that was hilarious. first he says that thai and japanese sex tourists that come to cartagena prefer pregnant women in their 5th through 7th months. europeans prefer blacks. later he says that while they saw prostitutes 16 and 17 years old back in the 1990's, more recently they're seeing them 8 to 11 years old. anyway, i guess we should stop bitching about the italians and israelis and get ready for the hordes of thai and japanese sex tourists that are coming to cartagena to bang pregnant hookers. (this all sounds like bs he's using to promote his foundation).
4. while the police do a reasonably good job of policing the places we hang out, you don't want to hang around in poor neighborhoods. in fact, the camera man and reporter were filming a segment about a prostitute and her family life, when a gang banger comes into their hovel, waves his gun in the their faces, chases them down the calle and then steals the camera. they caught all this on film. the police recovered the camera and put the perpetrator behind bars in short order. basically, as far as the police are concerned, you don't fuck with the press or tourists or anybody rich or powerful in cartagena. but otherwise poor neighborhoods in cartagena are like favelas in rio. the gangs control the barrios. there's some great, but short footage of gun battles between the gangs in a couple of the segments. there was some improvement in the months just before the filming, as a result of auc types (right wing paramilitary) coming into the barrios and wasting gang members.
5. while colombia in general has become a much safer place under uribe, violence has increased in cartagena. now the homicide rate there is higher than bogota. (again, this would apply to the poor barrios that the sane among us stay away from.)
6. they had some info about a couple of italians that were killed in parque de apolo at 10:00 in the morning. the thief did it to get their digital camera. he was quickly aprehended by the police. this sounded like a freak incident to me.- if you've been to parque de apolo during daytime, it seems like the safest place in the world.

I'm sure everyone is familiar with the checkpoint outside of LDV. Late at night the police check you, your chica and taxi driver for contraban. My concern is what if they find something on the taxi driver or in your chica's handbag? Am I going to spend the next 5 years in a Colombian prison?

They searched the cab and found a pack of smokes with a couple of handrolls and a colombian cedula of a 20's guy. I just told the cop who spoke perfect english that it wasnt mine.
