One thing however you should know is that Thailand -and Bangkok in particular- has the habit of not cooperating with your best thought out plans. Be it inevitable delays in crossing town, unexpected closures of the establishment you wanted to visit or unexplainable absences of service providers, any plan you make should be flexible and allow you to "go with the flow".

Thailand is a Buddhist country and detachment of all things material or spiritual is a way of life. Just say "mai pen rai" and carry on with a smile. If a taxi driver tells you that the place you want to go is closed, take another cap. This is the most common scam. What happens is that they want you to go somewhere where the driver gets commission.

Taxis drivers wants fixed price. My experience is that if you just politely tell the driver where you want to go (without asking about the meter), he will start driving. If he doesn't turn on the meter, I ask him why the meter not is on. Don't get into an argument about it. Just kindly say that you want to stop.

Going to the airport might be hard without fixed price (usual around 500 be from the Sukh. Area).

Tip a little. To much tip is to make a fool out of yourself. Too little is making a fool out of the other person.

In general: Behave nice. Be kind. Don't get into arguments, Don't raise your voice. Be polite, and repect the people you are dealing with. Smile.

Everything in thailand is about face, and not loosing it. They don't want to loose face.

If you go to Climax (Basement of Ambassedor Hotel, soi 11) or similar place, and buy a bottle of boze, the girls will be all over you. Be aware that they are trying to make the best of the situation. I don't thing that they are the girls with the best intentions. But it can be fun.

Also respekt the girls, the service staff in the gogo bars, and the mamasans. They will all try to make you buy ladydrinks. Be polite if you reject make an excuse like, you have to leave very soon, you are waiting for you friend, or something else. In this regard, I try to use the skytrain and MRT (subway) and manage to get to where I want (or very close to it) perhaps 95 percent of the time using these. Although they have gotten crowded recently, particularly the Skytrain, they are modern and absent the problems one would likely encounter if one relied entirely on taxi for transportation. Moreover, they generally get you where you are going more quickly owing to the fact they do not have to cope with street traffic.
