You know, it does make you think. As much as my heart breaks for myself not being able to go to Thailand this time around, despite the planning, money invested and so on, when sad things like this bus tragedy happens, it does kinda put things into perspective. The deaths themselves are tragic, but the way they went is so horrific.
Any of you still believe there's actually a god out there? While the world has plenty of evil assholes just walking around everyday consequence free, these innocent little souls were burnt to death? It's stuff like this that's proof positive there ain't no such thing as god or karma or any of that shit.
It really does put things into perspective. These young lives just snuffed out like that. While here I am an old man, still just waiting to get back to Thailand. When someone's dead, they can't wait for nothing no more. Maybe, just maybe in a fucked up way, at least they won't know the pain of being an adult. Of living life. One can only hope they had happy lives before it all ended.
It's just fucking sad. But here's the thing though, I know enough about Thai culture specifically, and Asian culture in general, that the parents you see being sad and stuff, aren't necessarily sad that their kids are gone, in and of it self. It's more that they're sad no one is left to take care of them in their old age. It's just how it is.
In a weird messed up way, it does put into a wider context though. It's like you know what? Sadness like this happens. I've had a long and sad life, and Thailand was all I had to live for. But anything can happen, at any time. I'm running out of dough, that's for sure. I ain't employed no more, that's for sure. But Thailand is still there. And somehow I'm still alive. Not in great shape. In very bad shape as a matter of fact, maybe I'm just a few sidegras away from a heart attack. But what's the old saying in latin? - Dum Spiro Spero. While I breathe I hope.
Somehow the universe is keeping an asshole like me alive, jeez. Those of us who want to die, or deserve to die, live. While those that deserve to live, die.

I can't believe how horrid it has become. The opioid crisis, ridiculous cost for healthcare, homeless everywhere, guns in every corner of the country, no viable public transportation in the majority of the country, an incredibly obese population, food supply controlled by a few large corporations, an incredibly high incarceration rate, a militarized police force, it's just abominable. I'd rather swallow a bullet than ever live there again. I think it has to be one of the worst so called developed nations on the planet. And don't get me started on what has become of our hobby there. It's incredible how expat's eyes open once they get out of there.

Most people in the US have annual earnings of less than $35 k, and that means they're definitely not getting healthcare as a benefit. Much less anything else that first world countries give their citizens.
