I've been going to Thailand for 16 years now if I'm correct, 3 months a year (yes every year). I do not recall when it happened to me but I know the last times when I was just going out without attachment (if you understand) has to be around 8 years before.
By that time I was so bored of it that I stepped inside somewhere I was only interested in my beer and not at all looking at the girls licking each other. I just didn't care anymore if they were naked, good looking, or whatever. Nowadays I've got a GF / wife and she knows me (in fact we know each other from 12 years ago) and she gives me a couple of days of without asking.
Now, I enjoy more again but it will never be like in the old days. I look again at the girls, I do not like talking to much since it is rubbish anyway (they know it and they know you know it when you speak some Thai) , so that is why massage parlors are know my favorite spots. Nighttime is for pool / drinking and sure I will look, and something might happen but chances are not huge.
I like looking and listening to other people, all the jibber / jabber is quite entertaining for me.

Many were opening up their vaginal openings for punters to enjoy the inside view and the moves were a lot more in your face type. A pure bliss and worth the 180 bahts drinks price. Still dominated by Japanese on first two floors.
Overall it appears that decline of Bangkok sex industry continues with a massive drop in number of visitors and a resultant drop in quality and quantity of working girls. If you say it has improved dramatically perhaps I should try again, trying to ignore all the fake girls. Sounds like they have decided to copy the Crazy House style, somewhat. Some years it doesn't increase as much as it did last year, and that's what people are referring to as "decline in tourism". It's only bad for those who invested (bet) that it was going to grow more. EG: buying / loaning money to construction companies to build hotels.
I can assure you, quality is down because there are more tourists here, even in low season, which really isn't even that low if you look at the numbers. Low in the sense that you are making macro level bets, the slightest off on a down trend can cost you all your money.

Anyway, I miss that 'vibe of Sukhumvit road' you describe so well too. And even more the vibe that Beach Road in Pattaya used to have about 10 years ago.

Not just the raunchiness of the sex scene but the overall impact of a vibrant SE Asia city.
When I first went to Bangkok, Thailand was really the only easy SE Asia capital to visit. Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Mynamar are not on the tourist scene and "sex" was the Bangkok ups.

They get higher prices and do not have to walk the hot Sukhumvit streets. It's easier work for them, and the wave of the future I'm afraid.

I think the biggest change in the Bangkok freelancer scene is the proliferation of smartphones so cheap even a low income Thai girl can buy one. The old hands, and I count myself among them, who still expect to see quality freelancers standing along Sukhumvit Road in the numbers they used to in the pre-smartphone days are looking for them in the wrong place today. There is less and less reason for them to stand in the heat and rain night after night to collect a contact list full of new and regular customers, when all they need is one or two takers per night from their smartphone's contact list to keep them busy and off the street.
Check out the pretty, sexy young girls in bolder than normal attire riding the BTS or MRT, shopping in the malls or walking along Sukhumvit Road, the ones who are not the least bit shy about maintaining eye contact for more than 5 seconds and returning your smile with an even bigger one of their own. Keep smiling, approach her politely and quietly say, "Hello". Turn the screen of your smartphone on, bring up the keypad of your phone app, push it toward her as though you were handing it to her screen side up and simply ask, "You want?" If she is up for a bit of P4P exchange, she will totally understand you are asking her if she'd like to put her phone number on your phone, call herself and thereby add her number to your contact list and yours to hers. And that edge is what made it so captivating for all of us when we first came. The farang YUDs (Young Urban Douchebags) that come here now are far different than the expats of yore. They are not mongers, in fact most are very turned off by the idea and openly show disdain and contempt for us. Many have brought their farang girlfriends with them or prefer to date Western women here. Those that do date the locals opt for a more traditional Western style relationship. Most of these YUDs are living paycheck to paycheck as well. I am involved in the local indie music scene and deal with these folks on a regular basis. 5 min interacting with a 20 something Western woman reinforces the fact that I have zero interest in them. The level of self-absorption is unreal. When I moved to Thailand there were basically three types of expats. Those on fat expat packages, those that had money already, and English teachers most of who had a little means as well. All three of those types loved the local lasses and for two that is the main reason they moved here. Not the case today. The YUD invasion happened as a result of poor employment prospects in the West. While I admire the moxie of these folks to get out of their home country, the are very different from us old school dudes and view BKK as a sort of NYC of SF lite.
