When I was a complete newbie, 24 years ago, I did attend a few places with an experienced buddy who was showing me a few venues like Phat Phong, Cowboy bars, Chawala, Thermae, The Grace coffee shop and massage, Darling. His Thai speaking was more advanced than mine at the time, even though I had studied Thai for 9 months previously. In later years I became more experienced in Bangkok and Thai speaking than him. I have little clue how my extended first trip would have played out if I did not meet him.
If you have no experienced buddy, then the ISG is your guide. I was not aware of ISG till about 10 years ago.
In the past, I spent many hours sitting in the dark at Chao Praya 2 watching the fishbowl. I could eat and drink while waiting for something to take my fancy. It did not feel weird to me. More like cool. At some soapies, you meet pushy papasans trying to get you to select a girl in a big hurry and telling you lies. It's cool to resist them and even ignore their recommendations. Some recommend terrible girls that pay the papas an a kickback for being recommended. Unless you know the papasan can be trusted, don't trust him. If you don't know a papasan, no need to tip him before going with the girl. Can tip him something if he made a really good recommendation that you followed. Most soapies are not in Sukhumvit. Amsterdam is my favourite one in the modern day but not the cheapest. Most people recommend Nataree but girls there tend to be less experienced, and a high percentage of dick scared girls. So I have found few great girls at Nataree, where others have been much more successful. My second favourite in recent years has been Copa Cabana. Its all crap shoot though if you get a good performance or not.
Experienced Soapy girls are often better. A few months experience is good enough. Can try Soapies Annies or Darling in Sukhumvit area, but don't be surprised if the girls are older and not so fabulous looking. For bodyslide, I would try Dr. BJ Nuru, or any Oily place offering Nuru.

When you engage an agogo dancer for LT, she will not go with you in her "dancing clothes", but will go to the dressing room and change into street clothes such as jeans and t-shirt.
She will not look different from the thousands of other Thai girls on the street, so the "walk of shame" exists only in your own mind. Personally, I call it a "walk of pride".
Of course when an overweight plus-50 farang walks hand-in-hand with a minus-30 Thai girl, especially when he is wearing a big smile, it doesn't take a clairvoyant to know what is happening.

I guess they are not "on the hunt" but only in for some drinking and ogling the dancers.
Soapies, oilies, all kind of massage places, . . . Are usually visited solo and nobody will look at you in a strange way for doing so.

In fact my experience is that they constitute almost 85-90%. But with extensive chatting and probing one can unearth a non pro gem. Of course like everywhere else on TF also it is a hit or miss scenario. But I have scored more hits than miss on TF till date. At the same time it requires you to invest a lot of time into the whole process of short listing. So obviously an average monger on a short visit prefers the P4 P.
