There are isaan people, the khmer of surin, buriram and sisaket, the Lana, the suay, white Thai, black Thai, Malaya, Burmese, kachin, Karen, shan, etc etc etc numbering in the millions and many of these groups stretch across borders. As with anywhere in the world more and more people from rural areas are being drawn into the cities and since there isn't much well paying work many end up in the black and grey industries.

You cannot "buy" your good karma from someone else (the well-known bodhisattva in the Mahayana tradition of Buddhism) so you are the judge of your own actions (with karma being the ultimate arbitrator). That means that their moral philosophy is pretty flexible, a concept followers of monotheistice religions cannot really grasp as in those traditions morals are absolute since they are imposed by their supreme being.
For example: my present Thai GF would not come to my hotel room because "Buddha says no". After one dinner and one day of visiting places around Chiang Rai, she moved in with me in my hotel for the rest of my vacation. I asked her why she suddenly changed her mind. She said I was a good man, "jai dee" and not trying to take advantage of her or other people. And Buddha obviously has no problem with having sex with a "good man". I love Buddhism!

I had booked Hotel Mermaid, Soi 29 again this time for my 3 night stay. I had asked for an early check-in and was provided. I had booked the Corner suite with balcony at cost of approx. 2850 baht per day. I had stayed at the Junior suite last time and it was too big a room without any separate living area hence was not much impressed. This room was very spacious with small kitchenette and a small balcony good enough for smoking and having a drink with your lady. Breakfast was bundled in the room cost and is very basic but just enough for my requirement.
As usual staff was extremely friendly. Daytime as well as nighttime security guy were very courteous and helpful. The girl I got to my room was not asked for ID. They did have a register kept near the security guards desk if someone wanted to register.
