I think you should be ok in Shanghai this is a tourist city and many foriegner expat live here, many speak english here just hank out around toruist bar you will meet friend, you don't need any one to hold your hand but I cannot say that on other city in China.

For picking up take out girls, the easiest bet is Manhattan at 154 Nanyang Lu. Again, have the concierge write the address in Chinese and take a taxi. Maybe 10mins from your hotel.
