Well, actually I do recall there being a few "Yes in the bar, No in the room" scam experiences in both Bangkok and Pattaya in those days, just like today.
I was never much into the soapy or oily massage shop scene then or now. Just have had nothing but utterly forgettable (at best) service from the girls in them. Even when I tried several of them again in the past few years. I tried a couple of soapies back then and remember one in or around Patpong that had very young girls working there. Younger than you will see anywhere in any of the venues now. Different times.
On the BB issue, this would have been in the early to mid-90's so there was already a push for more condom use. But my memory of it was that it was merely seized upon by the girls as an opportunity to "up sell" to a better experience without a condom if you paid more. Quite openly so. It wasn't like a request to go BB was some outrageous moral lapse. The girls back then just perked up and made it known they would go BB for this or that extra baht. I remember one girl immediately suggesting a multiple night barfine take-out rather than a single night on the premise that she would feel ever so much more "comfortable" about it with a customer if she was booked for 3 or more nights in a row instead of just one. 555.
I remember going to Thermae Coffee Shop back then. But I think they had already moved from the previous, more legendary location by then.
Okay Quite possible old Thermae was gone by time you got there. I experienced the early Thermae bar and Soapy MP 24 years back. Was my favorite spot. Knew a few girls at Thermae. Progression to BB was not hard. No HIV known in those days. Only had to make sure she did not have Herpes. Other STDs easily treatable if had bad luck, and if had no girlfriend. A lot of semi-pros at the Thermae bar having regular jobs but needing a bit of extra money. Many guys got a lot of knock backs from the girls. The girls could be picky and look for a guy they liked before agreeing to go for the night.
I recall LT from Cowboy 24 years ago cost me 400 to 500 Baht. Like $25 in those days, so no reason not to have a girl with you ready for a nice fuck when you wake up. LOL. I would have thought the BF was likely to be well below 200 Baht but should ask my friend if he can remember. He had been coming to Thailand since quite a few years before me and remembers when getting a fuck for 100 Baht or so was not uncommon out in the provinces. T1234 suggests BF was 200-300 30 years ago and LT was 500-1000 30 years ago. I am sure I never paid as much as 1000 in Cowboy even was only 24 years ago. Perhaps prices did not change for a significant period. Perhaps prices in other places were higher, e.g. Pat Pong. The memory of detail fades. I do remember taking 3 girls from Pussy Galore on holiday to Koh Chang for 3 days approx. 20 to 22 years ago, and did not cost me a fortune. Actually I was only fucking one of them and two more just came along to keep her company but slept in a 2nd hut. The girl had a hot body, but if I look her photos now, face wasn't that special and nose was not that cute. More fussy these days.
Late 90's when I arrived- BF in Cowboy was 400 Baht, 500 in Nana. ST 1 k LT 1. 5 k. Exchange rate about 40 to 1. FLs in Thermae were ST 500 - 1 k. SWs 500. Night out with diner, drinks, and a ST was less than 75 USD.
Ahh, those were the days. I really miss the 40:1 exchange rate. It looks like it may be edging closer to that again. I don't think we'll see 1500 baht LT again soon, unfortunately.
...I recall LT from Cowboy 24 years ago cost me 400 to 500 Baht. Like $25 in those days, so no reason not to have a girl with you ready for a nice fuck when you wake up. LOL.
Of the two locations, the Philippines, particularly Angeles City, was considered by me and my fellow punters as better for a LT choice while Thailand was considered better for STs. Greater language and cultural differences re Thai girls vs Filipinas likely playing a part in that I'm sure. When you clicked, there just seemed to be more of a GFE with the Filipinas than with the Thai girls. And that justified spending the whole night and next morning with one. More romantic. Noticeably less mercenary.
Also, that was the sales pitch for a place like Angeles City; "Pay the bar and the girl stays with you all night. All-inclusive. No additional money required the next day. " Of course, as I mentioned earlier, that supposedly sweet "all-inclusive, pay-upfront" system had an eventual major downside if certain bar ownership mindsets prevailed. Which they did. Bank the money upfront in the bar, create a good reason for your customer to kick you out early, return to the bar asap and continue hustling Lady Drinks...no problem, no negative repercussions from the bar owners/management for pulling that stunt with their customers. Perhaps a pat on the butt and a bonus instead.
I don't remember doing many STs in the Philippines but only recall a couple of times in as many visits to Thailand where I wanted to stay with the same Thai girl for LT. Until I married a Thai-born girl in the USA, that is. 555.
Mid 80's:
BF 200-300.
ST / LT 500-1000 (max).
MP 800-1200 for two hours, multiple pops.
Never tried Oilies only soapies MP.
Fx was B40+ to US$1
Two soapies i most frequented included Darlings in Patpong and Bangkok Cozy (back then super upscale with sideliners that had their own suites with large jacuzzi). I remember doing my first "sandwich" at Bangkok Cozy, actually triple decker, ordered 3 girls at one time, LOL!
I stopped going to Bkk for about 10 years, from early 90's to 2003/2004. Then upon return, discovered WSG, eventually ISG.
You must be suffering Alzheimer's too. You never got 40 Baht to the US dollar till late 90's. I have looked at the historical graphs. Early 80's the rate was under 25. You may recall an era when Thai Baht was not floated and was tied to US dollar. Late 80's was just over 25. You may recall Asian Financial crises in 1997 when rate sky rocketed to 50 then fell back to around 40.
I think you got your decades mixed up.
Also Darling Soapy is in Sukhumvit Soi 12. I don't remember Pat Pong having a Soapy called Darlings. Name mix up? I could be wrong as it is very hard to find any history info of Soapies that existed in the early 80s. I can't get any info about the one I visited in Sukhumvit Soi 2 in approx. 1983. I can recall maybe seeing Darling's sign from a distance mid 80s without knowing exactly where it was or visiting (did visit on Soi 12 about 1991) . I also recall passing Sahara in a taxi plenty of times. Was located on Sathorn close to Rama 4. Shut down long ago.

Bit Style is open again
The 'Japanese style' BJ bar Bit Style is open again. I went there last Wednesday around 11 PM. There was only one girl available and although she was a little bit chubby she was attractive and a really nice girl. I don't recognize her on their website though. It might have been Zonya. She gave me good service including CIM at the end.
Prices went up with 100 THB compared to the first time I was there. A 40 minutes HJ session is now THB 1000 and a mixed HJ / BJ session THB 1400.

http://bitstylebkk.com/en/
Are you Japanese? What made this place of interest above other BJ joints, to you? Its not the cheapest place for BJ and I certainly would not pay 1000 for a HJ (not ever going for a HJ). However is it that the girls are better looking (to some)? Can the girls be negotiated up to a fuck?
I wouldn't want a chubby one personally, but one pictured with hand on hip on web site could be my type where most have that artificial look Japanese guys seem to like.
I don't know what Bit Style means. Nothing to do with Bit-coin or computer bits? Perhaps the name should be ignored.

SIM card scam
Apparently the 7-11's and Family Marts don't sell SIM cards anymore (maybe because the mandatory registration takes too much time?) I was redirected to a phone shop at the ground level of Nana Square mall, at the corner of Sukhumvit and Soi 3. I bought a Happy Tourist SIM 7-day Package there for 399 Baht.
Later on I noticed they had cut out a small part of the packaging. I checked the DTAC website and found out they cut out the real price: 299 Baht. See https://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/.
Did some googling and found out I was not the first to be scammed: http://www.desiyatri.com/2014/01/thailand-sim-card-scam.html.
I've always bought my SIM cards at a 7-11 and I've never been scammed. Now that's not possible anymore I will for sure pay more attention.
To avoid scams you can order a SIM card online and pick it up at the airport upon arrival.

No I'm not Japanese, not even Asian. Bit Style just has (much) better looking girls in a nicer setting (the place looks brand new) compared to your average BJ bar.
But I agree it's expensive. So is it worth the money? I guess that depends on the girl you choose, her skills and personality and the 'chemistry' you have with her. As always YMMV.
Officially FS is not on the menu, but again YMMV.
I don't know either what Bit Style means. Maybe it's a variation on Gangnam Style?

Bit Style
I have stopped into Bit Style four times since it first opened. Then there was that long break when it was closed. Of the four times I went, I only chose a girl three of those times. A fourth time the lineup was just not inspiring enough for me to choose any of them and I took a pass altogether. The 3 times I did take a girl, I took the only one of about four in the lineup that wasn't chubby, plain or wouldn't be among my least likely choices if I had seen them at, say, Som's Haven, Kasalong Bar or L0 litas Bar. I always hear about how much hotter the girls are supposed to be at this place than can be found at the BJ Bar competition around town. Their website used to tout that as one of their strong points and business missions. But I have yet to see it. In each of my 4 visits it would have been easy for me to find more younger, cuter, alert and sparkling little ladies on either shift at Kasalong Bar or L0 lita's than I saw in the entire lineup at Bit Style.
However, I realize these things can change in a matter of minutes and maybe I just missed all the young hotties that are supposedly working there.
But the skill level was a bigger problem for me. Of the three girls I did choose at Bit Style only 1 was capable of responding to my request to please slow down and be more gentle. That experience was quite nice actually. The other 2 were stubbornly determined to break the jack-hammer speed record if they didn't snap off my dick first and would not under any circumstances change their "bit style" for more than a stroke or two before reverting right back to the jack-hammer speed race. I aborted those missions before enough damage was done to my package to put me out of commission for a couple of days.
As you can imagine, at this point I have no idea why that place charges almost double what their competition within a moderate walk or short taxi ride charges. As usual, YMMV.

Also Darling Soapy is in Sukhumvit Soi 12.
The Darlings was located behind Silom Rd and the old Robinson Department store. Across the back parking lot of Landmark Hotel.
As far as fx rates, honestly don't remember. LOL.

You can purchase a SIM at the airport without having to reserve it in advance. After custom, when you come out make a right, you'll see the True SIM booth. All they need is your passport and your phone unlocked. Took me about 10 minutes. Got a 30 day, 4 G data plan for 500 Baht.

Beer bars help
Hi guys,
This will be my third trip to Thailand, first however without 'company'. Any suggestions or recommendations for the best beer bars with sexy Thai ladies around Nana? I will be staying close to Nana plaza and will do my hunting mostly there.

Seeing you don't describe girls very positively, one wonders what caused tou to go there 4 times and pay extra for a bad service. Okay One girl was good enough. Could have booked her again. I.
Anyhow, mystifying that you had 4 visits and stayed 3 times. Why? Your negative impression seems to have arrived very slowly.

In 1991, Darling was already in Sukhumvit Soi 12 but could it be there were two of them at the time or did Darling move sometime earlier? I have a faint memory of being able to see the Darling sign from a distance on my 1983 trip to Bangkok or subsequently and it is possible that was in Silom. Sahara was also visible from a distance.
The internet is great for recent history of things but getting info for the 80's is almost impossible.
