Start with Bangkok, it will be a more gentle introduction, both to Thailand as a whole and to its sex scene in particular.

Then take a plane to Siem Reap and visit the temples. 4 days should be enough. Upon returning, go straight to Pattaya and jump right in the playground.

As to at the airport, I have seen it go back and forth as to whether they all turn on their meters and I finally decided to just have "my" taxi guy come and pick me up even though I end up paying him more to do this than if I paid a negotiated rate to a taxi who wouldn't turn on their meter. At least I know my guy is honest and hard-working, and I don't mind paying him a bit more for this.

[/QUOTE]Normal rate is around 550 baht for a taxi ride from the airport to your hotel. As long as negotiations don't go over 600 I wouldn't mind the guy wanting to keep the meter off. What was he trying to get?

With a meter (you pay tolls of 75 Baht) I've experienced a lot of 195 Baht, and a high of just under 300 Baht. Things do vary, but this is my experience with about 15-20 trips in.

I have never had an issue with fares from airport. I always insist on meter so there is no temptation to skip the toll roads, cost is usually 400 baht to Suk. When traveling solo I take the train as during the day it can be faster than taxis.
