I'm headed over soon and just wondered if anyone had any recommendations on decent hotels to stay at in the Zona Norte? I don't need anything spectacular. Is there anything clean and safe for $20-$25 a night (or cheaper if you use Pesos)?
Speaking of Pesos, what are the best places to exchange US Dollars for Pesos? I'm going to take the board's advice and try Pesos to see how much I save over a week's time. Any suggestions on places to do this?

From my limited hotel experience in TJ $20/25 will buy you a room to hang out in..drink beer take a dump have a seat etc. but you will not want to sleep there. There might be an exception but in that price range I doubt it.
IMHO be ready to spend between $40/50 a night for budget lodgings . Bring ear plugs and if you have an ipod try to download some mp3 nature sounds. This will make you more flexible when choosing. It works like a charm for me. If you don't have an ipod try a towel over the TV w/ white noise.
Take an hour and go through the forum. The TJ forum is well organized.

I'm sometimes surprised by the conflicting advice in the boards about taxis. I've ridden pretty much everywhere in Mexico for years and years in the front seat. The old adage was if you ride in the back US-style, you're announcing to the world you're a easy mark gringo. You're less likely to have trouble riding up front with the driver like the locals do (except women will mostly ride in the back unless they are the novia of the driver). You'd have to be insane not to check the back seat before getting into a taxi. If a ratero jumps in while you're at a light it would seem that 9.9 times out of 10 that means the driver is complicit in the heist. If that's the case, you're pretty screwed since he'd probably let someone jump you at a light or stop sign if you were sitting in the back. Maybe it is just me, but in my trips from the border or Pueblo Amigo to the Zona the taxis don't spend a lot of times waiting at lights, like many places in Mexico the conductores seem to consider stop signs more a suggestion than something they have to do.
I think the key takeaway here is you have to be vigilant pretty much from the time enter park your car in San Ysidro until you're back safely at your car. Don't think for a minute bad things only happen in the zona.
I always sit in the front as well. Better view, plus I like to chat with the driver. The logic is, if you sit in the front, the driver is in reaching distance to the passenger's vital organs with a knofe or gun. If you're in the back seat, you have his back. I think the taxi thing is the drivers preying on the weak, namely women, and only isolated cases, but with the downturn in their economy the number of incidents may increase.
As far as the 4 attempts, I would always walk in the danger zones late at night since I'm more into streetgirls. The area I got the most mugging attempts were up ninos heroes and articulo123 past midnight, and I was always alone. Two of the times, the perpetrator were ladyboys. Best advice, walk near the street or in the street. If you notice someone tailing you, immediately cross the street, and look back. Try to have an exit strategy in case something goes down. E. G. Know where you plan to run to if someone armed pulls up in a car, etc. Keeping on hand by your chin with forearm along your chest could block a chock hold. I pretend to play with my goattee to play that one off.

As I was stymied by the traffic yesterday, I though I'd take an early Sunday trip South. Traffic great, left OC about 09-30 and was walking through the turnstiles in 1hr 41 mins. A cab to HK then walked across to La Perla for brunch. In future, I must remember to ask the taxi if he has AC, it was damn hot, even with the windows down.
A couple of tacos con cervezas and I was across the street in HK......ghost town. It was 11-30 and the place had maybe 10 mongers there, watching maybe a dozen indifferent looking chicas. After one beer I went into the alley, plenty of talent there but I was the only gringo! So I put my back against the wall, let my eyes get accustomed to the glare... and went back into HK.
I couldn't bring myself to choose from the remnants there, so I went to Adeiltas. On the way, I ducked into Chavelas, dead.
In Adelitas I grabbed a beer and a stool. The only hottie in there was already in negotiations with another monger so I settled in to wait. After rejecting a few hungry looking waifs I was approached by "Barbara". A gordita with a winning smile, good sense of humour and a great price. $40, 1 hr, all positions, BBBJCIM, anal, etc etc. Once in the room, the expected upsell wasn't long in coming so we settled on $50. Seeing as the room was for 30 mins, she was also safe from having to make good on the 1 hr, but it didn't matter, she gave a great BBBJ. I wanted to put her through her paces so I refrained from nourishing her further and went at her, RCG, CG, finished mish, a decent session.
For those of you who feel pretty relaxed reclining back on the pillow on the bed with the towel under you, I saw her wipe her cooze off on the pillow and throw it on the bed. Scents of KY and rubber anyone?
I was at the border in 12 mins and had my first setback in several years of mongering, the line was all the way out of the building and out past the cover. It moved OK but remember this was 1-30 or so and it still took 35 mins to get through. Out of the $8 parking (I just prefer it)....1hr32 mins and I was in my driveway.
Sunday am is not the best time to get laid in TJ but it's better than wanking in the shower.
What is the protocol about paying for extras with SW's ? I remember they used to ask for the money up front but I never asked for more.
Usually In a brothel setting or my hotel room I put the agreed upon money on a table and say " it's yours when we finish". I usually never have a problem with this. Sometimes I let them pocket the base fare and agree to pay them for the extras AFTER they carry out their promise.
For some reason I doubt this will work in TJ. Is this correct ?

Very few agree to do as discussed, some adjusting in the room. HK chica adjust for anal, if requested and available.

For street girls, you'll pretty much tell them what you want, including whether or not they will undress fully. After settling on a price, stick to it. Do not pay up front. Tipping is at your discretion, but for service above and beyond, etc. Do not cave to upsells. It just makes it harder for everybody else.
The money on the table thing is OK, but use it as a last resort, not a first resort.

We've all been in this situation before. You get into the room and she wants the money up front. You just paid for the room so the clock is ticking. What to do ?
Like I said I've never tried the table thing in TJ. What would you suggest I do as a first resort ?
Its been a few years since I was in TJ. Mongering in south america is very different. Excuse me for what seem to be newbie questions.
Like you said the clock is clicking and room paid, if you have the time to hear the stories of situation where the chica was not paid in the past than go for the ideal situation. Call her bluff.
Deal with Less time on the clock and her concern for being paid before the big deed. Does it effect her service ? Does one get more? What is the Chica thinking ?
