Really, at Suvarnabhumi I cannot get bothered to lug around my luggage until I find someone to open the turnstile, hunt an arriving taxi and then save me 50 baht.

The whole idea to "split" arriving and departing taxis is to make things go more smoothly. If taxis get the idea that they can easily pick up passengers at the arrival level then they wil loiter there and congest the whole area.

Paying extra for a pick up at the airport is not something unique in Bangkok. For instance in France, it is a well established practice that you pay 2 or 3 euro extra if you take a taxi from the cab rank at any airport, port or train station.

At Suwanaphum I am still leaving from departure level even though officials are trying to prevent us from crossing the road to where the taxis are. At the Thai Inter First Class end (start of International), I could still avoid officals and just lift my bags over the fence, avoiding 50 baht airport surcharge. Still find I have to give taxi drivers directions of how best to get to my place. Taxis love to take a route that is not the shortest for time, sometimes picking normal slow roads (thinking I want to save every last Baht). Actually I just want the quickest route not stuck in traffic.

Greenbud, The one way turnstiles at Departure have been there for quite a long time, more than a year I guess. I still go through in opposite direction but cannot easily get bags through in wrong direction. So I lifted bags over the fence first.
