The role of variants in extending the pandemic cannot be determined with complete certainty but we can make some reasonable educated guesses on how things will play out. All variants so far have been identified prior to the Christmas surge with some having been identified as early as last summer. The most notable ones were found to be circulating in greatest numbers prior to Christmas. But despite that, the case incidence has spiked and has since come back down. And the mutations apparently just made them more transmissible but has not proven to show a higher mortality.

Looking at the major variants and their regions of origin (UK, South Africa, Brazil, Japan, California), those areas seem to have seen a peak after Christmas and the incidence has since come down. Brazil is the only place where the decreases have not been drastic. But Brazil has been known to have enforced very little regulations.

Things may change and a "super mutant" that is capable of escaping recognition by the immune response elicited by all major vaccines is possible but the chances are small.

Somewhat concerning is that this week's numbers did not show a rapid decline when compared to recent weeks, but rather plateau'the from last week. Either an increase is on the horizon or we are witnessing a baseline level of spread given the current moderate restrictions.

Attached regional map shows the highest number of cases in Saxony and Bayern (because of proximity to the Czech border). My suspicion is that all of the stress is due to Germany's greatest concern now being the "Eastern Front. " History must think she's being funny.

I agree with your estimates regarding reopening dates. Hoping for May, betting on August.

I live in the UK which has been hit badly by the virus but the situation in the UK is improving rapidly every day. For some reason I always assume the German authorities are more in control and better organised than the UK and when things are improving in the UK I automatically assume Germany's situation is improving too. It appears I was wrong!

The British wave isn't as bad as some report, all the vaccines currently prevent serious illness, hospitalisations & death with this & other variants although it doesn't guarantee prevention from mild illness with some other mutations.

If the British variant was that bad the UK figures wouldn't be reducing very quickly in transmissions, hospitalisations and deaths.

Our Idiot Prime Minister Johnson is announcing on Monday the "road map back to normality" although foreign trips are not on the agenda yet it is being talked about how travel will recommence as 17 million Brits have already had their first vaccination, (having mine tomorrow!

As you correctly say FKK land will be way down the list of venues to reopen but I always appreciate the latest news in Germany as any positive news is a small step forward to their reopening so thank you for posting.

I'm regularly in Germany and I was in Germany last week for business, and despite that both hospitalizations and "cases" are way down, the restrictions are becoming more and more absurd. PCR testing and online registration required for entering the country and staying in hotels. Most of my German friends and colleagues that I talk to are getting more and more fed up and frustrated with the incompetence of the German government, and many of them advocate to getting our freedoms back whilst protecting old and vulnerable people.

Some bars, gyms and restaurants might open in the summer of this year, but forget about FKK clubs. So far my predictions have been reasonably good; I predicted last year that the re-openings during summer 2020 would be very short-lived, and I predicted that the "vaccine strategy" would be a complete mess with mutations destroying it's efficacy.
