If the grand poo-bah kicks it, the country will go into extended 'morning' for a year and you can expect that, while business certainly won't shut down, much activity in the nation will be slowed down considerably until his funeral, which will be a spectacle like nothing anyone alive has ever seen. The country could also go into such a political and economic melt-down, that the current crisis would look like a slight disagreement between friends, by comparison.

Well, WHEN he goes, it may actually be good for the country. Given that the whole institution is a cult of personality that will die with him, I doubt that his idiot son, universally hated as he is will be able to sustain the whole thing. Thailand could possibly once again end the monarchy as it did in 1932. Only this time, there's an extremely slim possibility that they might get it right and become a true republic.

Whatever happens, the next few years are going to be very rough, to say the least.
