Hi,
I believe you are referring to what we call "Monggo Banjum" unless the ones you saw are actually dark bruises. Korean race can be distinguished by dark blue birth marks that usually appear on hips. Some people have it on some other part of their body. By the time we reach the adult age, the marks disappear on most people, however, some have them for very long time.

Once again, unless they are actual bruises, nothing to worry about.

(It's a bit more complex that that, but that's the basic theory.) Obesity clinics and OB/GYNs offer the service in Korea.

I've never seen the large dark marks the original questioner was referring to, though.

Never received a response back so I thought no other foreigner has had the opportunity yet to go to Ace. Told my friend to chance it. He went and got rejected and then he called me on his cell. I talked to the lady at the receiptionist and said you don't remember my friend? The dark spots on Koreans are "Mongolian Birth Marks". Yes they really do exist and are a result of Chinggis Khaan conquering Korea and Mongolians at that time inter-marrying with Koreans. My 1st wife is Korean and my son was born with those marks. Doctors took pictures and noted in my son's medical record the marks in case someone would claim child abuse.
