So if you are willing to pay 3000 for ST then you have been scammed, it's like going to a FKK in Germany and pay 500 euro for 30 min.

But this practice has gradually gone in recent years, but I think for Thai regulars they still do in some of the bars. I think we get many customers like Bbkdog, that's why BKK scene is no longer worth it. A few of these can quickly ruin the whole scene in Laos or northern Myanmar.

Next time I'm in Sephan Kwai, I will insist on 1,000 ST and tell them I must pay 300 for the room in the independent hotel across the street- total 1,300 or no deal!!! The nerve of them asking 1,800 short time! They should be charged with highway robbery and majorly contributing to the increase of prices in Bangkok. Apparently you were just there 2 weeks ago so we are not talking about the past. How old are you? 110? Maybe you forgot you were just there. Anyways, it's not 1985 anymore man. Care to explain your price comparisons between here and the tourist spots? You just focused on the hotel accross the street.

And 800 Baht total for drinks, food, ice and so on. He is comparing this to Soi Cowboy and Nana by saying 1800 short time is the same. This is a very local hunt ground for ordinary somchais, I just don't really believe average somchai pays 2 k ST, plus room plus food and drinks, and pretty much near 3 k for a ST session for an ordinary Thai man.

I was chatting with a friend from decent playboy last night, who is long term expert in Saphan Kwai, he told me the things I suspected, recently the big increase the number of foreign tourists in this areas namely the Japanese, these shops have developed a double pricing. They have somewhat standardized 2 k short time rate for tourists or 2. 5 k with hotel voucher in some shops.

He could confirm that the ordinary Thai customers are still paying 1. 5 k plus room, and the shop regulars are still paying 1. 5 k include room for years now. So just keep in mind about the recent double pricing when visiting this areas. You can try to bargain down but may not work anymore.

Highway robbery I tell you!!![/QUOTE]When we see a market start to develop a double or triple pricing, it is always the beginning of the end, the beginning of the long slide downwards for this market. 300-500 extra may be small, but it is just the start, it usually get worse and worse when every naive tourist or expat just pay and pay according to the shop's liking. Very soon the naive foreigners will be paying 1000 more than ordinary somchai. The trend would just keep going.

I have seen many markets in ruin just in these few years due to this attitude. Naive foreigners paying 1/2 or 1/3 of Thai monthly salary for a ST in some local somchai joints. The whole BKK areas pricing have basically been ruined by this attitude, including very local joints in Pinklao, Bearing, La Phrao, Minburi, ect in recent years these once honest local somchai joints all have learned their trick to extort 300-500 or 1000 or even more off foreigners with these attitude. It's not fun anymore when most of the mamasan and papasan try to extort as much from you as they can simply because you are foreigner. These BKK local joints in the suburbs unfortunately have all slid into such.

I hope these people confined themselves to BKK, since the whole scene local or foreign there have been pretty much ruined by this attitude. I am glad the world is not too small, there are still some little green spots here and there for us to enjoy and don't need to pay 1/2 or 1/3 of local month salary for a ST. But of course we will try to keep these little green spots pure of contamination as long as possible. A few with this attitude can surely ruin it in no time.

The local filipinos wanted to keep this area for filipinos only and didn't want foreigners coming in to their playground.

One guy explained it like this:

You foreigners have money so you have a choice. You can go anywhere you wish like the expensive places (the places he mentioned in Manila would probably equate to Nana, Soi Cowboy and parts of Sukhumvit in Bkk). Expensive places under his definition would be the standard bar scene in most places for us.

He went on to say that "we cannot afford to go anywhere near those places, so we want to have our own places that we can afford, and we don't want you guys messing it up for us".

Luckily I was with a group of locals who were well-known and so it was OK for me to visit once, but I soon got the hint that I would not be welcome if I tried to return alone.

This jibes with Bkkdog's story about how he didn't feel welcome when he intruded into Sephan Kwai.

I have sympathy for them. Most of us have a choice where we go for drinks etc, but many locals on laborer's wages cannot do that, so to go into their territory even if you're a cheap charlie is probably going to get the locals offside.

Be polite to the locals and have fun. This scare mongering is uncalled for. I've made plenty of friends in Sephan Kwai with the regulars and often sit with them. Very few Japanese guys in the bars when I have attended. There have always been 99% Thai. Anyways, don't listen to these negative guys. Learn a little Thai and enjoy a new experience.
