Somewhere along the way guys were tricked and led to believe that it is the mandatory standard to walk into a place and start buying lady drinks, the same way Americans were tricked and ingrained that tips are a mandatory part of a meal.

I've recently had my third trip. During the first two trips, I bought far too many drinks, out of politeness. This time, I only bought a drink for a lady after at least a few minutes of talking and deciding that I want to talk to her a little more (and after testing the waters in terms of contact). There wasn't any difference in success rate compared to previous trips when I spent more than double on drinks. I did go back to various bars and GCs a few times, so the ladies knew after the first time that, once I bought a drink, I was generous if the effort was reciprocated. I also refused various requests for drinks at these places, from ladies who just expected it, and it didn't hinder my subsequent visits.
