Basically though you get down to the Ring and hop on a train going west (counter clockwise) until you get to Westkreuz. Then you walk out the only exit in the station, through the parking lot, over the bridge, turn left and follow the road until you see Artemis (over a larger bridge) to your left.

Well you can try the BVG site as Angus suggests, but for a foreigner, it may not be quite so simple as they say. You have to input the start and end data Exacktly und Precisely, in the German Way.
One way is as D suggested, take the TXL Bus (direction Alexanderplatz, change at Beusselstr. S Bahn, head west on the ring 4 stops. (the rest of his comment could be a little confusing to a stranger).
So, an easy way is:

1. Grab the X9 Bus (heading toward ZoologischeGarten) located on the left side as you leave the terminal main entrances. During the day the busses normally run every 10-15 min or so.
The 109 Bus is slower.

2. Hop off at the S-Bahnstation JUNGFERNHEIDE (about 7 min on the X9 Bus). Bus stops outside so you walk slightly back to the right. Don`t confuse with the U-Bahn. Go up stairs.

3. Take any Ring S-Bahn going west (or to the right, up stairs, as you enter the station. Should be the S 41 or S42 but just check the overhead signs-they list the next station stops which should clearly state Westkreuz.
S-Bahn trains can be a little tempermental with schedules, repairs, etc. So just confirm it when you get there. S-Bahns come every 5-10 min during the day, can be 15 or so at night. Travel time to Westkreuz a whopping 10 min.

4. WESTKREUZ is 3rd stop, not to be confused with Westend (1st stop). Go up the stairs to exit. Then Angus rules.

The whole project, door-to-w (h)ore , should take less than 30 min. Note -going back to Tegel a little more complicated as the bus does not stop right in front of the S-Bahn for some unfathomable reason. Then the Beusselstr variant might be easier.

I was wondering about the same question, but ended up taking a cab both ways as Tegel is really close. It only costed 14-15 euros one-way. It was more effective for me as I was tired (!). Just my 2 cents.

But the surrounding neighborhood is quite dead and boring. Many experienced mongers stay more central say near Adenauerplatz, Savignyplatz, south of Zoo / Kurfurstendam, even Mitte which are all easy 10-25 minute rides. The S and U-Bahns back to the city center run late, on the weekends very late, and with a little study there are great night busses. I would find a better neighborhood that suits your needs, and just have a main transit link nearby. As you can cum and go from Artemis, as there are some really good private bordells (see the ISG Berlin forum) , some great music bars, and as there is lots to do during the day, other nicer areas should be explored. You really can get a bicycle for all. Booking. Com, hotel. Com etc you know the drill-lots of hotels and apartments.
