I was jammed up the other night by the boys in blue as I reported as I just walked down the street... I feel your pain. I was worried about them taking my $9,000 necklace. I mean if they had decided to take it from me what could I do? Yeah physically I can over-power them but they have guns.

Seems that search warrants are not required in Thailand.

Worse can happen. Don't look for trouble in Thailand. Some one close to my GF is now serving 2 years in the lockup after being setup by police with "Ice" supposedly for selling.

The reason. An argument with a neighbour. Turned out the neighbour was minor wife of big policeman at Lumpini station, so he was happy to arrange the set up.

Big money had to be paid to get the sentence reduced to 2 years. Would have been 6 years.

There is no doubt that some of the police are thoroughly corrupt. Could be a good idea to have mates in the police force who are nice guys. They might be able to give advice on best course of action when having problems.

The bad police are also in beating victims till they get signed confessions.

I would no go around with a $10K necklace.
Seems like just advertising for trouble.
I even carry my laptop com in a bag that doesn't look like a computer bag. Doesn't pay to look like you have something worth stealing.

I asked my Thai-yai friend from Burma how she managed to get back into Thailand after being sent back to Burma by police. Didn't the police steal all her money and she cannot open a Thai bank account?

She had smartly kept enough money hidden in secret section inside her shoe. Then she was able to bribe her way back to Thailand. Many others were sent home penniless and so had no way to get back again. She wouldn't have been able to pray at the temple because her shoes might get nicked.

The cops are looking for tourists and foreigners they think they can push around. So when ever i get stoped by the cops they see the card smile and tell to move on. so for you guys living in Thailand try doing the same. For the tourists try going into a lawyers office and getting a couple of cards from him.

(BTW I have been a lurker here in the BKK post for awhile, will post as soon as I get a chance to make it up there)

On my trips to BKK, sometimes they checked my luggage at the airport. Twice they found Viagra (bought in Mumbai). However, the only thing they did when they found it, was to laugh and make fun of it. They just put it back in my luggage and let me go. This happened in 2006 and 2007.

But when you tell me this story, then it appears to me that things have changed.

One responder quoted from the official Thai "CONTROLLED DRUGS CLASSIFICATION THAILAND" VIAGRA and it's clones are classified as a CLASS 4 narcotic, the possession of which carries far more serious penalties and fines than CLASS 5 narcotics which include ganja.

Imagine that: Viagra a more serious offense than pot: go figure.

More and more, it looks like I took the best option.

Best advice on Kamagara - buy them one at a time and consume it before leaving the pharmacy into the danger of the public street, where the police roam. I would not rely upon a 'prescription', as the police-man could simply tear it up when you show it to him.

He called a more senior cop over and they proceeded to grill me about where and when the Kamagra had been purchased. They then brought out a pair of handcuffs and said I was being arrested and was to be taken to a local police station where I would be charged with illegal possession of prescription drugs. They also made the point that if found "guilty", my passport would be red stamped, thereby making any further visa renewal unlikely.
This is the point where they also made clear that negotiations would now commence for settling the issue "On the spot": they started at B30,000!

I will say that at this point, I felt on pretty shaky ground. Several of the police were high ranking. Technically, they had me; I had no prescription and the KAMAGRA was from Cambodia. Even though the amount was small, I knew that if the issue was pressed, things could be made very difficult for me; especially true in that I reside here on a long string of tourist visas.
At the same time, I wasn't about to hand over B30K!
They negotiated through the girl I was with and long story short, ended up settling on B10,000 which I withdrew from a nearby ATM.
I gave him the money and got a friendly pat on the shoulder and my passport back.
There are those of you who will say I should have hung tough and refused to pay; but standing there, facing the real possibility of a much more expensive outcome at the police station, especially if I had to lawyer up, not to mention the possible future visa difficulties led me to decide that cutting my losses and settling it then was my best option: arguable, but expedient

Let this be a warning to all: be very careful what you carry in your bags and on your person when you travel in Thailand. Just because you can buy something over the counter in a pharmacy doesn't mean it's legal and the cops look for any excuse to squeeze you.

Ironically, I usually get off the bus at On Nut which would have saved me from this incident, this time I wanted to go to the BIG C on Ekkamai so stayed on the bus: wrong place, wrong time.

I have posted this experience on several other forums. I hope the moderator will also cross post this to the Pattaya forum as this warning will be useful to the many expats who travel there.
I think I fit A "profile" the police were looking for: older man traveling with a younger woman...much more likely to have a supply of "V" on hand.
