i would prefer sanur beach over kuta beach anytime. sanur is more like nice, clean, local, laid back, pristine bali, whereas kuta is like a cramped, busy, crowded and dirty australian bar town.

i would check out the many beach hotels along the beach north of the hyatt hotel sanur. the hyatt is western style, too close to town center and the beach is rocky, not very nice. within 10 minuted walk north of the hyatt are many smaller hotels built in unique balinese styles, with nicer, wide open beach like this vila shanti.

However, it's only a short taxi ride from Sanur to Kuta if you want to check out the nightlife. I've stayed in both places and prefer Sanur, but it depends on you, some folks prefer the crowded up-tempo Kuta experience.

Last time I was in Bali, I stayed at the Hyatt in Sanur and loved it, and the beach was much nicer than the beach in Kuta.
