Was there one time at Apocalypse Now last year. I was sitting with 2 girls. The one was 33, but told me she was just 26. The other girl told me first she was 21, but her real age is 26. Stayed in a five star hotel and after dinner went to the bar and had a glass of wine. The chatty waiter said the bar was better than next door as it was smoky and had loud music.

Well there were no unattached women in the bar, I waited from 9:00 until 9:30pm.

IMO you made several newbie mistakes that others can learn from even though maybe you had a sort of decent time...

Mistake One - Staying at a so-called "5 star" hotel. It sounds like The New World(?) which cannot by law allow overnight guests unless they are registered. In other words, she has to have checked into the place with you right behind her (fat chance!) or you have to book her a second room (ridiculous waste!). *See my valuable FAQ in this forum about guest friendly hotel strategies for VN.

Mistake Two - Overpaying her because you were viewed as just another big spender at another overrated "5 star" hotel. VND 5000000 (around US $35) for "one pop" is a minimum double the going rate in HCM City but perhaps an acceptable LT rate.

Mistake Three - Thinking you could get her LT but she could not accomodate because it was high risk for violating the law. You were not in danger but she could be hauled off to a reeducation camp if busted!

Mistake Four - Not learning much of anything about the real VN by surrounding yourself in a communist run/joint venture "5 star" luxury hotel. The longer a newbie confines himself to such plastic space the more likely he is to remain a permanent newbie in VN. Finally, the comment about "safer" than going to bars is either cowardly, laziness or reveals ignorance about what relative small dangers and types of risk exist anywhere in HCM City.

Don't take it personally as I inform in the hope others won't continue to make newbie mistakes, spoil and ruin VN for the rest of us.

Thanks for the comments on my experience and no I don't take offence as we are all learning.

I am visiting Vietnam next week on business. Will be in Hanoi and then HCMC. Can anyone tell me if the Sofitel Plaza in Hanoi is guest friendly and also some contacts in Hanoi will be much appreciated, as it seems the Hanoi board has not been updated for a long time.

Also need suggestions on a girl friendly business hotel in HCMC. Any specific bars / discos I should hit.

This is my first time in Vietnam and any suggestions / pointers will be much appreciated.

Just want to add my 2 cents worth. I'm a Canuck whose origins are Indian and I lived in Saigon for 3 years. For those posters who think that Indians or Blacks are not well liked by the VNese girls or otherwise you are dead wrong. India was one of the firse countries to recognize an independent and united VN and most VNese know this. Most of my Indian friends were well liked by VN girls and in fact it was commonly known that they often preferred the looks of Indians over whites. I attribute this to the strength of the Indian film industry in VN over the past decades. Now that US movies are gaining entry this will likely change. In 3 years I never met a VN who was openly prejudiced except for southerners against northerners and vice versa.

As for hotel, forget trying to get any girl into a 5 star unless you check in with her. If she is there at check in then it is no problem as they assume she is a wife/gf and all is OK. For pickup girls you need a mini hotel. Frankly the girls are really smart and if you are in a hotel they will try to milk you for $ (sweetly of course). I recommend that you rent a house or flat in a serviced apartment if you are there for a week or more. Should be lots to be had. This lets you say that you are working in VN or about to start a job and look credible. Then you can negotiate the rates down as they will look at you as a long time customer. No different than your buy 10 get 1 free coffee card!

I was at the Bar of the Que Huong/Liberty 1 Hotel at Hai Ba Trung Street the other day. They had a very good girl ratio there, with the one or other gem, but I had company then. So did someone else already have experiences there?

I was just in Hanoi recently and posted an update on that thread.

For Saigon, things haven't changed much over the years. I was in for 3 days and did the usual mongering in District 1. The BJ bars were an interesting experience for 20$. I reckon FS was available for the same price, but I wanted CIM. Most of the numbered bars have take out available for 50$ ST. I had a SW come up to the room for $20 ST but she was in a rush. Apocalypse Now was chock full of talent. Frankly, although the quantity is greater, I must say that the quality of the girls available and the service level was lower in HCMC compared with Hanoi.

"GFE" in HCM City or anywhere in VN means you generally do not have to pay for sex. Many if not most expats living in VN do not pay prostitutes for sex as they simply have a GF or several GF's who service them regularily with a smile. Yes, some will require a certain amount of "support" but that practice occurs everywhere. Most VNese girls do not want to be seen as prostitute since it's HIGHLY illegal and the society greatly stigmatizes them.
