Before I go on let me say one thing:
El Centro is Medellin. Medellin is El Centro. IMHO there is nothing else besides the high end girls.
Whenever I come to Medellin I always stay in El Centro. Why? That's where the action is at.
I can walk to the 2 Red Light districts and all the cases. It's very convenient for me.
To me Poblado is a little too sanitized for my taste. El Centro is where the true Medellin is. I know its gritty, grimey, smogey, noisy and crowded, but thats the experience of the place that I like.
As far as crime is concerned, all I can say is that I've never been robbed or even threatened the 4 times I've been there. Yes there's some shady looking characters walking around but they've never bothered me.
Usually I stay at the Nutibara Hotel right at the appex of the action.
i always check their cedulas for age.
they are cracking down on drugs and **** girls.
in that area you are playing russian roulette even with checking for id's.
most are fakes or copies.
it seems to be a huge problem in medellin(dr as well) unlike other places i have been to.
one of the main problems is *colombians in general like young girls. some of these girls on the streets should have been gone a long time ago but they are still there. why? the customers want them there.
on one side they want to clean things up. on the other side people are saying "fuck that" this is the ways its always been.
in order to clean something like this up you need a dictator who doesn't give a shit about anything else but the clean up and is willing to lose tourists and put people out of business.
get enough "do gooders" and put them in white "dove like" polo shirts and it * might just happen.

What hotel to use ?
that's the truth amigo!
watch out guys. i was talking with a cute chica near el farol and this cop descended on me with his partner asking for my cedula, asking me lots of questions, what was i doing there? looking for young girls? drugs? etc.
i showed him my us pport copy and told him i was just walking about, having a drink, listening to music, talking to pretty girls.
i told him i don't use or buy drugs for girls and if i was to like a girl, i always check their cedulas for age.
the guys (policia) were not friendly, but my answers satisfied them and i just beat feet out of there.
i would not mess with **** chicas and insist on seeing their cedulas if you happen to like one.
they are cracking down on drugs and **** girls.
another important decision you will have to make is which hotel to use if you session there. if you stand at el farol and look directly across the street(not the ave) you will notice girls coming and going from a staircase inside a bar. imho leave that alone. the one next door as well. why? i've been up there when cops were coming up the stairs. they will enter into the hotel.
not to worry if you arent doing anything wrong but i wouldn't want to be in that situation period. let alone share an erection with a cop. yuck!
i suggest using the hotel next door to el farol(10k). i usually dash out first or stay behind to leave by myself. in general i don't like sessioning in that area.
an even better choice but more costly would be to go to eros hotel(27k 6 hours) at the very end of de grieff. i doubt cops go up into that one.

wow. just think of a newbie with no or limited spanish in the same situation, unable to defend himself. big, big mess and hassle.
do you think the crackdown is part of an overall strategy to get a handle on the spike in murders?
plus, quoting artstyp: "it is however, still colombia". no matter how much we talk about having fun in colombia and how to do it safely, it always amazes me how many guys come here and think there is nothing to worry about. just plain dumb.
it's still colombia guys. don't forget it and don't be stupid.
stay safe,
Just want to say thanks to all you gents for this information. I'm in Medellin at this moment having just had lasik surgery done. Looking for some action while I'm here and I'll probably be checking out a couple of the strip clubs to start things off. Hopefully I can have a positive report to contribute, though I can't imagine I'd have much to report that many of you wouldn't already know. I do speak fairly fluent spanish so I hope that works out in my favor.
Wish me luck
Just curious.
How much is lasik in Colombia?
Bro,
That is just the style of everyone, if you want to take her to dance and dinner is good you ask her. She will feel more comfortable knowing the plans than just take her with out consulting her "opinion" just like talking you can say "what about if we go dancing first, woul you like that, there is a place you want to go or have a favorite? " the price will be exactly the same and you can see at front if she is comfortable with you.
Of course, you discuss where you plan to go first.. That goes with the territory of a "date". Prices vary greatly. It is NOT the same. If you hit it off and she feels comfortable with you, price might be lower. If you see her many times, it will definitely be lower. Then there are the hardened pros.. Won't lower the price.. asking for gringo prices.. those are the ones you want to avoid.
My self I still in my young stage so I don't take any prepago to a "date", if a invite a "prepago" to go out is because she is my friend and for me is not a puta anymore just another friend, treat her like a normal girl, sometimes they like to be treated like a normal human being, So pros or non pros a girl is a girl and that fact we completely forget because our vice of stereotype everything. For me is the same, the only difference is that I always give money to my escort friends just to not get rights taken. Like a nice gesture not offending, they always appreciate this and you put an imaginary line in the "relationship".
You are taking a prepago on a "date". If you want to justify that by saying she is a "friend".. That's just semantics.
in my opinion, advising gringos to go to shady areas to mingle with sw's is just plain irresponsible. this is what gives male tourists a bad name, there is a reason these girls are on the street and not in a casa. "trying to find a diamond in the rough" more than likely means a barely legal or **** girl who will do everything for half of what you'd pay in a casa. then you wonder why the army is setting up roadblocks in this area!
you guys are going to ruin a good thing for everyone with this behavior.
sorry, someone had to tell this guy.
obviously you are still wet behind the ears if you think sw's are a "no go" for a monger.
actually some girls prefer to be independent instead of being trapped in a casa all day. i met one older chica on de greiff who works from 6-9pm. no boss no little room with a matress on the floor with 10 chicas sitting on it.
medellin has their own issues. maybe mongers aren't a part of solution but at least mongers will know of their options.
you decide where you want to monger. let other's do the same. i just share the information.
do what you will with it.

if you hang out in the seedier parts of town especially at night, expect a strong police presence. i'd be worried if they weren't there.
if it's your first time, it's highly recommended you have a vet take you to these areas if you really want to check it out.
if you stick to poblado and laurales, you won't see this much. el centro during the day is relatively safe as well.

Schwmm
Is getting hot there. Always was kind of dangerous, but police only do their job I like a lot Presidente Uribe, is one of the few good ones in the Continent, so is a good advise to take more precautions, SWs out of Mayorista I would put them on hold. Probably soon they will hit there too so may be better just to wait till they clean up and girls learn to carry their good IDs.
We don't need to be geniuses to know drugs and stuff always will bring big problems. Especially now.
Carry your IDs and don't do anything good that looks bad or anything bad that looks good.
Have fun and stay safe dudes.

El Centro Hotels
My fellow mongers, can I get contact information that you may have about hotels in el centro. I want to go to Medellin in May and would like to stay at one of the hotels in el centro. I want to stay close to the strip clubs and the casas. I like possibly info about hotel latino, unfortunatelly I am in a budget and although would love to have stayed at el castillo, I cant afford it, at least this trip.

Budget Hotel in Medellin
I am in a budget and although would love to have stayed at el castillo, I cant afford it, at least this trip.
Directly behind and north of the Catedral de Medellin and directly and of the intersection of Cr 49 (Venezuela) and Calle 57 (La Paz) are two very inexpensive and suprisingly comfortable and secure hoteles "de paso". I cannot recall the names or the name of the one I stayed at. Look at both and choose. You can see both from the intersection of Cr 49 and CL 57.
My room two years ago had a private bath, cable TV, very clean and for about $15 US. It had a little adjoining restaurant open daytime. From the Prado metro station go three blocks east on Echeverri and turn right at Cr 49. The hotels are on the east side of Cr 49. Mine was the one to the south (closest to the cathedral). I walked from the metro station but suggest a cab, don't let the taxista detour you someplace else. It gets lots of short term rentals and with the tap-tap of stillettos throughout the night, moans from rooms across the way. I have stayed there twice and will return to it my next trip. Great location, friendly staff, clean, secure and comfortable.

Fortunately not yet, but if she doesn't like you she will try try to charge even for talking.
And yes I have taken out prepagos and no prepagos I really don't care, I not trying to look good for presidential campaign I'm cynical big time but not a hypocrite, I'm not justifying bro. Is the true, they are my friends, no charge from their side at all, I have witnesses. I pay anyways, One of my multiple defects is to make friends even with the homeless that live in the parks of Asunncion in shitty tends made out of cardboard and garbage bags. No discrimination, rich people, poor people, prepagos, juanes, drug dealers, hippies, pornostars, religious girls, students broken packets, CEOs, politicans, vagabonds, old guys young guys, asian, blacks, Jews, Arabs, red, tan, no color, doesn't matter to me, a human being has his value for his soul not for his "title" or accident of gens.

hotel alcaravan
Hello Frank Casio and thanks for this report last year.
I am doing my research on places to stay in medellin and I like to hear if u know anything about hotel alcaravan as am considering it one of my best choices. Thanks in advance. Website is www.hotelalcaravan.com
Be safe bros
Hi guys,
I've lived in La Mayorista for over a year! I think that gives me a degree of expertise in the matter, oh, and 4 years in Envigado! The walk from La Mayorista to the subway is a straight walk and it takes a slow walker 10 minutes at the most, it takes me 5 minutes!
La Mayorista is a very large compound for wholesalers and retailers and a section of Banks "a la Carte"! There are 5 large Supermarkets, Olimpico, Makro and 3 others! These are all bunched together nearest to the street, along with the Banks! There are Cafeterias which kater to all the pretty girls which work at all of these Supermarkets and Banks! It's a very busy area, a lot cleaner and safer than El Centro! The walk from the subway to La Mayorista is travelled by thousands of regular folks every day, and is full with street venders. It's stratus "3", area around Bar El Faro in El Centro would be Stratus "1", El Poblado being a Stratus "5-6"!
There are not hundreds of "bumbs" like in El Centro begging for money, mostly vendors of gum and ciggarrets and shoe shiners, there are no sniffing glue "persons" like in El Centro", and the police closes the street on special holidays and some weekends around the girls, giving it a more festival atmosphere! There are no drunks walking around like some claim, only regular guys, truck drivers, many of them, and young guys drinking like in any other party section of the World! Colombians at La Mayorista mostly keep to themselves, pay very little attention to Americans, just go there to party with the girls!
The subway closes at 11:00 PM, and up until then there are Working Folks and College students walking up and down the street! If that frightens some individuals, then my advice to these people is to stay at home after 8:00 PM! I've never heard of one crime occurring in this section in all my time there, and much less against a "gringo"!
A few blocks from La Mayorista is "El Centro De La Moda", everybody from Medellin goes there to buy clothes because there are dozens of specialty clothing stores, Jeans, shirts, shoes, everything you can think of, at very low prices! This area is famous in all of Medellin!
I really don't know what is the motivation behind some of the less than factual statements posted about La Mayorista, but I really hope that some people get their facts straight! When I say cuties, they don't have to be "9-10s", "6-7s" are "cuties to me, and after 8-10 beers they definitely appear to be like "9 or 10s"! I send pictures, the first ever taken of La Mayorista, to anybody that asks for them ! It is not El Poblado, but is a Good-N-Cheap alternative to it, with access to everywhere via subway ant dozens of Taxis !
Frank Casio! (excuse the typos, as I'm in a hurry)
Gary you may be right, but I would say is very relative. Your experience was like that and for me is about the same in MED, VZl, BRZ or Guadalajara. But, because I kind of know how they think and how to get in their pants.
But I have to talk for all the regular people with no Spanish, not to much knowledge of every culture, average look and play and just a nice attitude.
That means the big majority of us.
Guadalajara is harder. You are right, girls are gorgeous, but they are very familiar with gringos, they won't be impressed with a foreigner at all. Actually they kind of avoid them, they can be just educated but don't let you get in their circle very easy, you have to have good money. They know very well the difference between a DollarStore gringo and a potential sugar daddy.
So normal girls can be very full of BS and hard work with out success for the majority.
Pros are not that easier either, many are used to make easier their money thanks to the stupidity of us, I will say something painful but real, girls in Guadalajara prefer Latinos because since the 1800's the city always had gringos around and they know Mexicans are way better lovers and more romantic, besides a lot of assholes acting like "kings" screwed out our reputation. So now is not that easy to get a good regular fuck with out fighting first this stereotype that we made through many generations..
I would say far away from USA the better the luck for regular foreigners with gorgeous girls in general.
Dealdo,
You make some valid points. The scene you mention is currently happening in Medellín, sorry to say. I have repeatedly heard from all sorts of service people here that Americans and Israelis are the worst and kinda hated, but all foreigners are tolerated because they spend money. Suprise: Mexicans are considered the most respectful. Go figure.
Stereotyping a whole group is a shame but have you ever heard of an untrue stereotype?
