Another matter is the alleged blocking of the ISG site in Lima. Imo the problem is the movistar server in Miraflores is often down especially in the afternoon. Very erratic and it was down over one day last week with interim outages. It's working again with 100 percent access.

After finishing with Maria I went to tequila rocks. Maria does not fully kiss but is surprisingly tight. Recent performance was lackluster which means adios.

Mr. E's prior report reminded me of an experience several years ago in Lima involving Craigs List. I had been to Lima few times at this point but stayed in hotels, which I considered over priced and not very private.

For this visit, I decided to look for a one week rental with Craigs List and found a one bedroom apartment in a new building in Miraflores. I arranged the rental through the owner and only had her name and limited correspondence with her before my arrival. The plan was to pay for the unit upon the following morning after my arrival. I arrived in the late evening on Friday with enough time to go to Tequila Rocks and find a date for the night and she left before the owner came by for the rent. I frankly was expecting an older lady -- you know the type -- middle aged, Peru style thick rimmed glasses, frumpy, and unattractive. Instead a gorgeous girl appeared at my door and sat down with me to chat about Lima.

I was meeting a friend at a nearby coffee shop on Balta and she offered to show me a short cut. However, my friend was not at the shop (a lucky break). She mentioned that she was carrying the rent money for several units, as she was a property manager, and needed to make a deposit. I volunteered to accompany her and off we went.

After making the deposit, I suggested a late lunch at Punta Sal, a popular fish restaurant overlooking the Pacific and the Malecon in Miraflores. We had a nice lunch and several glasses of wine and I made an excuse about going back to the apartment. When we returned, I mentioned that I had nothing to drink and suggested going to the market to pick up some wine while she waited in her apartment. She readily agreed and it was at this moment, I realized that I had a real shot with this chica.

They've redesigned the site, but it is still slow and not a lot of volume on there. Definitely a higher than usual amount of scammers on there as well. When I switch my address to Canada, I get numerous webcam offers and Nigerian / Russian scammers posing as ladies looking for love.

Latin American Cupid is definitely a good site with minimal scammers, although there are working girls on the site.

I 've contemplated retiring in Lima (on a "rentista visa") but the rising cost of living and the decreasing mongering climate are reasons not too. Earthquakes are another good reason since renting a seismically secured place would render accomodation prohibitive. I'll have to die some day but I don't want to die crushed between slabs of concrete. I've studied earthquakes at some scientific depth and they're something you can't stop being scared off by studying/understanding them. Quite the reverse. You can stop being scared of AIDS the more you know about the disease but earthquakes are different. The indiscriminate and geotechnically naive building of high-rises going on now in Lima is downright criminal. The contractors/planners should be the ones going to jail, not the pimps.

If you would have asked me 10/15 years ago I would have been " sold " on the idea in a NYC minute. I seriously thought LIMA was my destiny.

I used to think the same way too but when I lived in Peru (2011-2013) the conversion rate was $1. 00 = 2. 70 Nuevo soles. In the end, I decided not to live there. It was not that much cheaper in Lima than Europe or US if you wanted to live up to that level of comfort.

Now it's $3. 50 NS, a whopping 30% devaluation. Then, it was more expensive than I anticipated, especially Miraflores and other upscale neighborhoods. I wonder if this devaluation and related decline in mineral commodity exports has resulted in a decrease in apartment rentals and other mongering costs in Peru? What's a decent one bedroom going for in MF these days?

Of course, the personal safety issues, particularly outside of the expensive areas, was always a concern. After living in Asia, I can vouch that personal safety issues are much greater in Peru and South America in general.

Thanks. I would say the average cost of a decent one bedroom in Bangkok near the main entertainment area and the Sky train is about $800 to $1000 per month when converted from baht to USD so basically about the same. I found a new place recently for $700 plus utilizes but it's a bit of a one off.

Arrived in Lima today from Arequipa via avianca air. Maybe less efficient than LAN but cheaper for gringos buying outside of Peru. Double booked my seat. Upgraded me to first class minus the meal. Tacky.

Last night a guide from Arequipa was going to take me to a place called tequila. Mentioned they had many Colombians and Brazilians. Rate is 100 to 150 soles per hour. Also said la acromar is decent and open. Unfortunately we both got too hammered from our day tour which included a visit to two pisco distilleries and cervezas.

During the morning, visited the Indian market in miracles. While wandering around, I ran into a slim hottie selling jewelry at a stall. Inquired about pricing for a silver souvenir spoon. Walked away. Returned and purchased the spoon. Chica is attending an English institute. Told her I can help her practice speaking English and homework.
