I had a very chubby gal insist (after the fact) that her profile was accurate even though I met her and confirmed that she was. Well, very chubby.. Not 90lb.

Ah, now is the best time to be in The Philippines and looking to hitch up with a student. I assume it is customary to pay for travel expenses afterwards (if they are located somewhat nearby, which doesn't cost that much money). However, for a longer trip, I would assume that you have to up front the money. Which is a slight risk given that they may just keep the money and not show up.

Given that, what is a good reliable and cheap way to send money if you're in PI (or from abroad)? WU price seems somewhat steep.

For now, I'm working here in Hong Kong as a Domestic helper for heck! I can't find a good paying job in my Country. I do household chores. Hahaha! If a girl is keen to meet you she will find a way to get to where you want her to go. Very big risk (not a slight risk) that she will keep the money (especially if it's a plane fare of something more than 1000 php). There is ALWAYS some urgent bill to be paid or junior needs a new pair of shoes and suddenly they have cash-in-hand.

Paying large amounts to fly a girl to meet you is high risk in many other ways too. If she turns out to not be what you had hoped for, you are stuck with her for at least a reasonable time until you can send her home again. I have had several meetings like this with local girls, and it is easy to just send them away after a 5 minute meeting. It is not so easy if she has travelled from afar.

I always offer to pay taxi fare if they are nearby, because at least it means they will show up reasonably closer to the expected time and not have to take 3 or 4 smelly jeepney rides to reach me.

I give them return taxi fare too. If they choose to go home the long way to save cash then that's their business.

If she's that far away that it takes a ferry ride or plane ride, find more local talent. Tell her you will see her on your next trip when you are in her area. There is plenty of talent closer to wherever you are. If she's not within taxi distance, she's too far away. Or if she's near / dear to you, consider traveling to her province. Like RK, I reimburse them for taxi fare both ways.
