It's from knowing Thai Language. Letter V does not exist in Thai. They always use W sound never V sound. The Thai script name for VIVA is pronounced Wee-Waa. So it is pretty straight forward and I was aware of this Soapy "Wee-Waa" beforehand.

Similarly Sukhumvit road is really Sukhumwit road, and Vibhavadi Rangsit is really Wiphawadee Rangsit. I have a Weesaa not a Visa. Why the Thais have chosen to use use letter V when spelling things in English, when W was the proper sound, is a big mystery. Strangely a Thai J sound is often spelled as Ch in English (and visa versa) too. Hence the Chao Praya river should be Jao Phrayaa, and River Kwai is really the River Kwae (sounds like Kwair). Ha ha! Strange spellings to confuse us.

Strange pronunciations of Pattaya grate on my ears a bit. LOL It should be like Put-ta-yar (with Put as in "put" the golf ball). So many guys like to correct me and say it is Pat-thai-ya (complete BS). "Patts" also sounds just a little silly to me. Correct pronunciation of Phuket, Koh Samui, and Koh Phang Ngan are just too hard for 99% of westerners, so anything will be acceptable. Why Thais had to come up with so many difficult names? LOL My 2nd trip to Thailand I asked taxi to go to Indra Regent Hotel (I had started to learn Thai already but was weak). I ended up at Regent Hotel, a different place altogether. I did not know pronunciation as "In-Traa" (no Regent at all) was critical to getting to the right place. Unfortunately learning to pronounce Thai generally takes a few months. That is the only hard part of the Thai language really.

Mongering in Bangkok is so easy in the modern day in some ways. Girls often speak some English. The internet provides so much information, especially ISG (where most forums are crappy). Google Maps helps locate things (assuming pins are placed correctly. Not always).

Thai addresses are making it very hard to work out the location of something. In the old days, like 25 to 35 years ago, there was no Google Maps, and so finding an address could sometimes be very tricky. You would have to get near, then ask people on the street or in a shop if they had any clue where something was. That was if they could speak English. LOL Or show them address written down, and hope they had some clue where it could be. There was no ISG and no internet (to my knowledge).

Sometimes you just stumbled upon some mongering establishment or read something in a Travel book. I remember vaguely staying at the Ambassador Hotel 34 years ago, going for a run at night without my wife and stumbling on a Soapy MP in, Suk Soi 2 most likely (not Annies). Went inside, not knowing much and saw the tiered seating of girls behind the fishbowl. Papasan could speak English. I had low money with me and no ATM or credit cards (left behind in hotel) as was going for a sporty run. LOL. Soon was surprised to have a naked girl in the bath with me. Communication not possible. No common language. LOL Did not cost that much. Forget the price now. I was scared of catching STD (had no condoms) and probably the girl did not have any either.
