Motorcycle taxis split lanes, weave around traffic jams, will even hop into sidewalks and go the opposite direction on stalled roads. They charge more because it might only take them 5 minutes to get you to a destinatiion it would take an auto taxi, tuk-tuk or bus 1 hour to take you. I often take them for that reason.

If a short distance it will be cheaper than a taxi which costs at least 40 Baht. Motorbikes have the inconvenience that they are not officially allowed to collect a passenger from any location, instead they should be returning to the official station with no passenger. This is a stupid rule in a way in that it adds unnecessary overhead, since essentially we pay the price to be taken somewhere and for the motorcycle to return to the starting position. Also it causes many drivers to be waiting in a queue for a passenger at some locations, where other locations have a shortage at some times of the day.

I note that for longer distances, Thais can bargain a cheaper price. So it might be Farang surcharge or heavy weight surcharge. Even if I don't get a cheaper price, the time saving is worth it for me. So motorcycle return from Petchburi / Ekkamai intersection to Soi Cowboy cost me 120 baht which seems a bit excessive. I was expecting more like 90 Baht since wasn't a really difficult trip using back Sois, but he probably applied Farang surcharge and since it was from a Soapy to Cowboy, that probably influenced the price. Taxi would have taken longer perhaps 25 to 30 minutes to go 5 km through moderately heavy traffic, and perhaps might have cost only 70 to 80 Baht. Motorcycle probably took little more than 10 minutes.

The official price in 2015, for up to 2 km was 25 Baht, 5 baht for each additional km up to 5 km and then 10 Baht for each additional km up to 15 km. So 5 km trip should have cost me only 50 Baht, I guess, maybe 60 Baht if just over 5 km. Some guys might have charged somewhere around this region, and the Thais can probably get around this price. At 120 Baht I was clearly ripped off. I should have negotiated the price before we departed, since it is not a set destination with a set price shown on a board. Taxi would cost 60 baht for same trip, possibly 80 in traffic.

So the bottom line is yes, Motorcycles should be cheaper than a taxi and quicker. The only reason it is not cheaper is when we get ripped off. They have no meter, so for any non standard trip, negotiate a price if you are concerned.

The price of that motorcycle service is much cheaper than what the motorcycle taxis have charged over the years. Does Thailand have that? It is very tough to negotiate a price with a motorcycle driver. There is no way he is going to give the same price to a Farang that he might give to a Thai. Does not help that I am larger than Thais and weigh 90 Kg. You can negotiate better with a taxi driver, since he is aware you can just pass and try the next taxi. With motorcycles it is not like that. They work as a gang. Some other driver in the group is not going to give you a better price.
