fp made some racists remarks that have no place in a civilized society, but for some reason he is unable to speak up for himself, which is why you are speaking for him.

frankly this "race card" playing is getting old. slavery - which of course was a terrible thing - has been abolished for long now. nobody of us whities around now did partake in it. guaran-friggin-teed. unless you believe in inheritable sins, i think we should be considered innocent on that count.

in fact, some of us would argue that, today, more whites are being killed and raped by blacks than the other way around, and that many of those crimes are, if not outright racist, at least racially biased. but that's another discussion, perhaps more suitable to carry on on another board.

Without getting into who is right or wrong, I'll note that last year I posted a trip report on my one and only visit to Cartagena, Colombia wherein I had the temerity to note that this Caribbean city, unlike other Colombian cities, had a large black population that was poor. Well you can guess the rest. In this case, the 'white guilt contingent' was led by a humorless knowall named Surfer, a kind of Colombian version of Junior, if you will. I tried to engage them intelligently, even proffering the fact that I am married to a dark South American myself, and therefore, highly unlikely to be a racist, but it was futile. I was treated like I was Bull Connor or something. Your humor-laden approach is much better.

Like you, I was surprised at Wastrel. I remember him writing some very intelligent stuff.

I'll be in the PI myself in two weeks. The Peninsula in Makati offers an internet rate of $135 plus tax, which would get you a holiday Inn in the US, so I'll be there for several days, and then on to Boracay probably. This is an outstanding hotel and a perfect place to entertain female friends.

I was out, alone, last night in Zamboanga, and I happened to meet two US Mlitary guys, one black and one white, who invited me to join them. I had an excellent evening, and I was quietly reflecting to myself, being of an advanced enough age to remember some of the bitter struggles of the 60's, how far we had come as a nation. For one thing, the black guy, who was from Tennessee, outranked the white guy, who was from Detroit. For another, they were best friends. and for still another, the issue of race never came up. Amazing. And here are the two of you verbally duking it out like the last forty-five years or so have never happened. If you want to hate each other, fine with me. But for the sake of the rest of us, take it private, and base it on something a little more substantial than skin color and hair styles.

Thanks for your advise on upgrading my life, but [i]geeze thanks again[/i] for the tip but my life is pretty good right now, I usually fly business class on certain carriers where I can accumulate sufficient rewards to use for more flight or can pay for my stay in certain hotel chains used by the carriers. I personally don’t believe in trying to do things on the cheap because it’s a false economy you only get what you pay for in life – girls included.

Every recruit in the US Military is informed of this in no uncertain terms by an officer and an NCO as soon as they get off the bus in basic training, and that behavior while in the uniform of the USA most definitely will and has resulted in an immediate trip to the stockade and a dishonorable discharge. That has been true for decades, becuase it has long been the the policy that racist crap such as that will not be tolerated as it destroys unit cohesion and gets people killed in military operations, as well as being repugnant to everything the US military exists to defend. Please enlist in any branch of the service and try it and see what happens to you. I would pay to go back and watch. You will quickly find your jailhouse lawyering will not help you with the Uniform Code of Military Justice any more than it will get you to require a property owner or businessman to put up with you on his premises, and nearly any American business of any size INCLUDING THIS ONE has an explicit policy to throw out anyone engaging in such disgusting behavior. I have indeed evicted and terminated individuals engaging in that behavior, and will no doubt have occasion to do so again, and have never lost a contested case for such termination of tenancy or employment. Smell the coffee. Very few people of any political persuasion outside of a prison yard wish to tolerate crude sleazy racial slurs. What is a good daily budget not including plane fare but including:

- A clean well air-conditioned room with hot water and safe
- Meals
- Light to moderate drinking

I plan to stay in the Manila area. My tastes are pretty discriminate, since there are plenty of philipinas in my home town, and I am not in the least dazzled by the exotica factor. I am pretty accurate with ages, and am looking for young hotties only.

It really depends on the class of place in which you want to eat and where you will go for drinks. If you hang around the more upscale places, even if you're only spending $50 a day for a room, you better plan on about $200 per day. If you're ready to settle for a little less, you should be able to get by with about $125 - $150. If you want to eat at fast food joints, and drink beer in places like LA Cafe, then obviously you can get along for a lot less.
