I moved out on april 1st and when I went to pay my bill for the gas and electricity, this is where the bullshit started. I will try to explain it, but its kinda weird.

When I went to pay my bill for the lights and gas, the woman’s daughter told me that I actually owed her for an extra 4 days!!! She said I owe for the 28th of February and I need to pay for the 29th, 30 and 31st of march!! I was floored!! I kinda half expected I would have to pay for the 28th, I know there is no such thing as a free lunch! But the 29th, 30 and 31st bullshit I didn’t understand.

She told me it works like this is in brasil. "if I check in to an apartment on the 28th of feb, then the clock starts ticking from that moment. So now I rental time period is from the 28th of feb till the 28th of March!!" She said my time period stopped on the 28th and I had to pay for the remaining 3 days I stayed in the apartment!! Furthermore, because it wasnt under the month long contract, i now had to pay the daily rate, which is 200R per day!!!!! So now I owed her 800Reias!!!!

With a smile on my face, I politely told her that I had already paid for the month of March and that at the most, I owed for one day's rental, the 28th of february! She swore that that is not how it works in brasil, she said,” whatever day you move into the apartment is the day you have to move out on the next month when you do a one month rental! If you move in on the 28th, you have to move out on the 28th the next month!”

Her and I went back and forth for over an hour trying to resolve everything. I even called over a brasilian friend who speaks English to try and get her to see my side of things. No luck, we were both convinced that we were correct. The lady's daughter is now laying a heavy guilt trip on me now, saying if I don’t pay the bill, the money will come out of her pocket because she is responsible for making sure the owner gets the money for the rental.

My question to the board is this. Common sense tells me I am right, however I know common sense in brasil does not always mean the same thing in America. Should I just pay the 800R, tell he to go to hell, or split the difference and chalk it up to a cultural misunderstanding?[/QUOTE]

Actually, the landlord has a point. This could be a maior legal case for law school homeworks.

A monthly rental would go from the 18th to the 17th of the following month. Right?

So from the 28th to the 27th the following month.

Logic is impeccable. Just that your logic also makes sense. But did you rent for a month starting the 28th? Also, if you rented February, you only get 28 days for your money.

But, the 4 extra days should be paid pro-rata based on MONTHLY rate, not on daily rate. So 2000/30 = 66 per day if I calculate that right.


I am not saying you must pay, but these guys have a perfectly sound argument. Maybe you pay on the base of my calculation.

Or in the middle between your calculation and hers. But yes, talk to the landlord in person

right, once you pay monthly, your extra days should be based pro-rata on your monthly price. This is common practice. Paying daily rate on excess day on long term rentals, this makes NO sense.

That is why this is so difficult, we are both Adamant that we are correct. I think its a situation where cultures clash. I shake my head at her thinking "how can she not undertand that I am right" and she looks at me thinking the same thing!!

To answer your question, I was under the impression I rented for the MONTH of March!! Not a 30 day period, but the MONTH of March! I guess me arriving on the 28th negated the month thing and made it a 30 day contract (in her mind).

I told her,"If i arrived on the first of Mrach, I could leave on the 1st of April and it would have been no problem?" she said "yes". So i said "because I arrived ONE day early, now I have to pay 4 days extra?!!! (28 of fev, 29-31 of march). I asked her "how does that make sense to you? I arrive one day early and now I have to pay an extra 4 day's rental!!" All she could say was "Thats how it is in Brasil".

I have to go see her on saturday, I hope we can settle this in a way where it doesnt cost me any extra money. We are not arguing or fighting over the money, its just a difference of opinion because we cant seem to reach a middle ground.

If this women has the right kind of friends, then you might find yourself in serious legal trouble. As the Brazilians say "My friends for me, the Law for my enemies".
You are right and She is right.This is why you will lose because local customs will prevail. Any amount of "gringo logic" will get you nowhere.
You are not fighting for the same stakes either. What is worth a dollar to you means much more to her in a country where the minimum monthly wage is a few hundred bucks per month.

I missed my flight and arrived a day late. I would've paid for the apt the day I was suppose to arrive, even if I wee not there. Instead the lady rented to someone else, causing me to stay in an apt I didn't like. Then I had to move. The second place was smaller and worse than the 2nd. So I moved into the Rio Rioss hotel around the corner from Blame it On Rio. THe apt guy said many Americans do not show when they are suppose to, so the lady thought i would do the same. Now I will find another apt person, because this guy doesn't understand that you treat reliable clients like gold. So I say give her her crumbs and move on.

I still say, what did you sign on your contract. It sounds to me like you are not sure what you signed, a very dangerous thing. And i understand what the others are saying. But i believe, i would go by the terms of my contract. Then, add any extra days.

Maybe if they have to be dedicated enough to pay the subscription fee and hit their post requirement before reaching the info, then in the process they will gain the tact needed to monger outside Copa without screwing it up or getting hurt.

To an extent. They are clearly separate monger areas. But it could get over-specific. Do you have a separate thread for Barra, or Niteroi, for instance? And a lot of people will stay in Ipa instead of Copa. So the thread titles need to be self-explanatory. (And it's not as if the thread list isn't quite crowded already.) My opinion is it would maybe work, but could do with more thought.

I'm maybe less keen on the senior member only idea. Being a senior member, afaiaa, just means you've hit the 'add report' button a certain number of times. It's no guarantee of anything else, such as familiarity with the area (you could be a Sydney veteran and a Rio newbie), good manners or streetwise sense. And 4x4, for instance, is going to be pretty open to all-comers anyway. If someone is likely to get themselves into trouble at a venue, I'll either try to make the situation clear or I'd consider just passing on info by PM, as people have done for me occasionally elsewhere.

The only added level of security I would really like is maybe something like they have on the Argentina board, where you can (I understand) post face photos and stuff that is very private but with the added security and a come-back on the poster. But BsAs is a very different world. I did suggest it to Jackson but in all honesty it might not work here.

Brazil Specialist - much as I respect the point you make, I have to take issue with telling someone what they [i]must[/i] do when it comes to their substantial contributions. People do these things cos they want. And often it's a technical achievement just getting it all to fit on a handy printout page. You can always add such thoughts yourself, as you have done, or when providing a link for someone to access the post. Better still, do an extra, original guide. As the OP said, hardly anyone else is posting new venues anyway, so why should he bother.

I think BS just wanted to give a good advice to me. He just doesn't want his mongerplaces ruined by gringos who behave like horny teenager.

I do have to admit that I was in [b]very much[/b] doubt about doing this guide again. Mostly because my fellow contributors of Centro information can be counted on one hand. Christopherd is one of those. There used to be several more contributors, but they are gone or prefer to exchange info by PM.

Most of the gringos that I meet in Brazil are very similar to me when it comes to mongering. I do my guide and I write my posts thinking about these guys and the guys on the forum who makes contributions that I appreciate. I just try to forget that the mongers who have no clue about how to behave, and make me ashame of being a gringo, also takes part of this info.

I have several fellow monger friends, with up to 20 years of experience in Brazil, who knows about wh*re-houses all over in Brazil. Are they contributing members here? No. Why? Because they don't see no reason to contribute when nobody else seems to give a f*ck about sharing new valuable info.

One thing surprised me when I went for one of my mongering days in Centro, one month ago, updating my list. I ran into two local guys on 4 occasions in 1 hours time, in the Rio Branco buildings. We met at the same casas over and over again. It turned out that they had my list printed out. When they saw that I had the same list they fell on the floor laughing. They appreciated when I adviced them about some casas that would be suitable for them.

It can be difficult dealing with people who are unwilling to even try to see your point of view. Thats why you need a lease/rental agreement. It always comes down to money - and how much they can get from you.
The BS sucks doesn't it.

Better to have a lease clearly spelled out with exact dates and price.

After reading your original post, you said, " we signed a contract for the month of March". If it is stated in the contract then you only owe for one day, the 28th, if anything at all.

urg 24 has a cute blond on the 1st floor, but that is about it. and beers are r4 on all floors there, i think.

in the end, yes, there are "dumb' gringos but that is only because they have not been informed. remember they are tourists. but brazilians act pretty silly at times. i think people, for a variety of reasons, just expect more of gringos than they do of brazilians, and others.

there is a big difference between a casa that charges r$ 20 and a casa that charges r$ 70. difference in service, comfort, hygiene etc. to the rio branco casas you go to get a session, not to party or drink. in the rb casas the girls smells like roses and treat you like a prince. if you happens to meet other clients there, they will be pretty welldressed and with good manners. people who don't behave or act like slobs will not be welcome there, no matter if it's a brazilian or a gringo.

in the r$ 1 casas just about all kinds of people are welcome, including low-lifes, slobs and silly brazilians/gringos. these r$ 1 casas might be very simple, noisy, hot, dirty and without shower possibilities. no need to complain, you're getting laid at the price of a meal at a decent comida a quilo restaurant. considering that many of these girls might have a dozen of dicks in their vaginas every day, in sessions that gives them 10 reais, i think they perform pretty well.

regarding the beer price, i think it's fair that they charge r$ 4/beer, because a lot of guys just go there to have a beer, grab asses and don't buy any sessions.
