For example, local people will not be allowed to check in for a flight to Thailand without a Thai visa, although the Thai Airlines local website says they can get a visa on arrival in Bangkok. The catch is that Chinese immigration will not allow them to leave without a visa!

To get back to your original question. 13 hours will give you plenty of time to visit Bodi or Sacrosa, both well served by Maglev or Metro from the airport. You should also have time for a look around. I would suggest a stroll along and dinner at one of the restaurants on the river. Good luck. Enjoy your visit!

For those who prefer to stay in, there are several possibilities that I've found.

Pick up a copy of Shanghai Daily newspaper (2 RMB) or may already be delivered to your hotel room. Go to Classifieds and find Massage section. After calling several numbers, typical range of quotes for massage only is 250-300 RMB, and FS inclusive is 700-800 RMB. After some haggling, one number quoted 600 RMB for FS only w / o massage. The final number is going to be somewhat higher as girls will ask for taxi fare, and some may request additional for BJ. So it helps to be very specific on the phone as to service included. Typical quality I've seen is girl next door type.

If you are staying at 5 star hotels, chances you if you wandered outside in the evening time, you will be approached and given cards for massage in hotel room. Numbers I've been quoted was generally about 800 RMB FS inclusive. Some offer girls from Russia and Korea, but cost may be 200-400 RMB higher. If you feel adventurous, you can follow them to their establishment which is probably a massage place, and the cost is typically lower and you can have your pick as opposed to having one sent for you. I might try that option at a later time.

Another option has pre-requisite. After visiting a sauna or massage place so that they know you are safe, you can inquire mama-san or papa-san if they offer in-room service. If you have found a favorite or memorized number of girls on your previous visit, you can request for the specific number of your choice. As been posted by many, price of massage does not include extra service so you will need to negotiate with the girl for the specifics.
