Not knowing any of your circumstances, I will say that I was impressed with Bonifacio Global City and McKinnley Hills in Manila near the US Military Cemetery. I do not know the cost of living there but they are very nice planned communities.

In fact, if I were to retire full time to the Philippines, Makati is about the only place I would consider for living out my days. In particular, I like the Rockwell Complex right next to the Pasig river. There is a big, nice Mall across the street (Power Plant Mall). P Burgos street is a very short cab ride away. No jeepneys allowed on the property. Although they do run closeby.

I guess the primary reason is that if I did indeed retire to the Philippines, I would want to be as close to First World living as possible. Makati and The Fort (close by) would do the trick.

[/QUOTE]Most importantly is to locate yourself in an area that best suits your personality and interests. If you're a nature lover don't live in Manila. Want to be a beach bum? Don't live in AC. If you love the buzz of a big city don't live in a provincial backwater. Live in place where you're bored and miserable and it'll tarnish your demeanor and repel people.

Having lived in Makati for quite a while I would consider it solely for the quantity and quality of women in metro Manila. It's easy enough for women to travel to Makati. BGC is very nice, but since jeeps are very restricted there it can be a bit of a hassle. I'm a fan of the jeep, but it seems most here are not. Alabang is also quite good, as is Eastwood, but I feel they are too far away. Yet, it is the traffic and pollution in Manila that make the place a tough stay. Certainly the cost of living in Makati is higher; a decent 1 br condo with security, pool, gym, and other amenities will be a minimum pf p25,000 per month, and p50,000-p60,0000 is not uncommon. Assuming that at retirement a bloke pretty much owns everything he needs and therefore doesn't need to shop for much other than food you could hang around your condo / neighbourhood most of the time. For some that's acceptable and for others they'd go crazy. Sundays are easy enough to move around, but once you get to your shopping destination it's packed. Manila certainly isn't a cultural mecca like London, yet I've attended several well done plays and musicals here - I can easily walk to the RCBC theatre and the CCP is a 20-minute taxi ride. The sheer joy you'll see in your girl's eyes as she watches a professional musical is worth 100 times the price of admission. If you're fortunate enough to date well-educated, professional women who graduated from UP, DLSU, Ateneo or UST and are open to exploring her world you will surely meet a lot of friendly and interesting people.

I'm a city boy but I'd prefer to not be in Manila. I really enjoyed Davao when I visited, and I'm considering doing a trial 3 to 6-month stay there to determine whether or not the girls are as available as they are in Manila. I know the bar scene there leaves much to be desired, but that's okay with me. It being close to Samal Island is a good point, and there are a couple okay golf courses nearby.

I would never retire to Angeles. Why? Too many foreigners, of both the long-stay and short-visit type. Seems to me too many of them have an overblown sense of entitlement and treat the locals with condescension. Just not my crowd. But of you're the type who enjoys sitting at the bar and having a chat with the lads while being surrounded by dozens of women AC may be your type of place. I'd rather be there than sit in LA Cafe or Burgos St bars day after day.

I used to prefer Thailand to the Philippines because hearing tales of woe and misery wore me down; it was easier to deal with a Thai girl whose English was much poorer than a Filipina. Choosing to hang out with the down-on-their-luck types was my fault. Since I've been here I've made a choice to limit my time in places like LA Cafe and maximize my time with girls I've met on the dating sites. Sure I've met some duds, but I've also met some really great girls too.

In conclusion I will gently say that the topic of "Would you retire in Makati?" would be better posted in the Living in the Philippines section of the forum, but at least it's in the Makati section rather than Manila. Seems all of us share responsibility to the current "untidy" state of the place.

Makati is far from Angeles, regarding the topic of the AC vs Thai.

Makati is a Part of the Manila Metro area.

In addition, the monthly dues, barangay taxes and insurance fees are much higher in Makati.

I did a long and extensive price analysis and comparison before I bought my condo in Ortigas.

I bought my condo to have a place to live so rental income was not important nor was its potential appreciation in value although I have seen a reasonable appreciation in the last 2 years. It is likely to go higher with the proposed investment collaboration of SM and Ayala in Ortigas expansion.

The bonus for me living in Ortigas is that I am virtually in the center of Metro Manila and equidistant between northern and southern expressways as well as between Cubao (QC) and Makati. The additional bonus is that I am close to 2 MRT stations; I can very easily stroll to 4 large malls (Robinson's, SM Megamall, Podium and Shangri-la), and Makati and BGC are both just a short taxi ride away.

You need a car / taxi to get between places in Makati (even between Greenbelt and Burgos). Greenbelt is no different to the new enhanced and expanded Megamall and Shangrila malls (except for the location of Havana Cafe, and that's a spurious reason for living in Makati since I very rarely go there). Remember that all the show business stars and TV dancers all work for ABS-CBN or GMA, both of which are in QC which is north of Ortigas. Most of these stars live in the up-market areas of QC.
Remember also that very few of the girls you see walking around Makati streets actually LIVE in Makati.

I tossed up between BGC and another place, but the other place narrowly won (unnamed as I don't wish to be accused of going OT).

BTW interesting that after 5 days, Mr Day-Timer man has still not responded to your answer, although he has made another post here. Maybe the topic is not really of great interest to him anymore as he did not get great accolades for his claims and questions.

I have an opportunity to housesit and dog sit in what appears to be a nice Paranaque apartment over the Christmas holidays. From what I can determine, Paranaque either borders or overlaps with Makati. Is this true or is Makati further away? I don't know the specific street location yet.

Also, this would be my first time in the Philippines and would include visits to some beaches beforehand. However, what would it be like to be in Manila during Christmas season? This would also include New Years Eve.

For many years the newsgroups (NNTP) have had a custom of re-posting an FAQ say once a week. This FAQ is revised / added to by board contributors under the supervision of a moderator. Sounds like work to me. I just use the search function, such as it is & do some background reading of posts before asking a targeted question. To be fair to ISG contributors, some guys are just too lazy to even make any effort before asking really basic questions.

I enjoy "listening in" on the ISG community here & throwing in the odd brain fart but I'm growing increasingly unhappy with the board software.
