I was in Asuncion end of June. As I used this forum for finding casas, I hereby report on my experiences. In this first report I concentrate on the more general aspects.

First of all, and as many other members have already pointed out, Asuncion is not a place of many tourist attractions. If you take it slow you are done in three days the latest. Furthermore, the city centre is quite dead at night. There's some weekend action a bit outside of the centre as pointed out by others.

June is the winter month in Paraguay and indeed it can be fucking cold. In particular since the invention of heating hasn't spread much here, the indoors is as cold as the outdoors. Summers are extreme on the opposite end of the scale I was told, however, aircon at least is common. Spring and Autumn are probably the most pleasant seasons temperaturewise.

Hotels:

It is hard to get a decent budget hotel. In the following I mention the ones I've been to and I consider recommendable. They are all in the city centre. I never took a chica home, so I'm just guessing on chica-friendliness:

* Hotel Miami, on Plaza Urugaya, 10 USD/night, okay hotel with good value rooms but no TV, street noise, probably not chica friendly

* Hotel Sagaro, Presidente Franco 657 (between 15 de Agosto and O'Leary), 15 USD/night, hotel has seen better days, good mattress and cable TV, probably chica friendly

* Hotel Palmas del Sol, Avenida España 202 (Tacuary, near Plaza Uruguaya), single room ca. 30 USD, double ca. 45 USD incl. good breakfast. A decent choice, has heating! and a pool, often booked (out) by groups, probably chica friendly

Chicas:

SWs can be found at night time in the city centre. Rarely are they dressed up though recognizable by behaviour. Often one women per intersection along Estrella and Olivia between roughly Plaza Urugaya and Montevideo. On the Montevideo end of the mentioned streets also bars with WGs. There are also other streets in the city with SWs and TVs as I saw them while driving past.

Out in the countryside (which is hardcore thirdworld) Guarani is used almost exclusively and there are communities that only speak Guarani. Watch what you eat in Asuncion, only eat in top level dining establishments as I got typhoid fever from eating substandard food at Excelsior Mall. In addition, I recommend getting phone numbers from the girls you meet at the privados during the day if you want any night action, because there is essentially NO nighttime mongering scene in Asuncion (there are girls at the Yacht and Golf Casino, but they want $100-$200 USD, a total ripoff when a hot chica from the privados want $25 USD per hour).
