Get us a flight to Mem-Martins!” A nondescript mess of sixties building has choked a place that, you can still just discern, used to be a country village. But even Mur’s revved-up historical imagination cannot picture, say, Byron passing through in 1809 on his trip to Sintra, eyeing up the barefoot peasant girls (and boys, too, it has to be said).

We are here to monger, not to muse. Phone directions home in on a florist shop 100m from the station, then a second floor flat.
