On the privacy issue, I've always had one unrelenting fear while staying in apartments in Russia/Ukraine areas - being ratted out by one of the neighbors. I could just see one of the older nieghborhood women saying to a GF, as we walk in, "Do you know how many different girls he has coming back to his apartment day and night?!".

I've never (yet) had this happen, thankfuly, but it is a persistent fear. I bring it up as I actually read of this happening from a guy on a Brazil forum (sure would like to go to Rio....reading about it is about as close as I'm going to get for now....).

Has anybody ever actually experienced such a problem? Does anyone at least suffer from the same fear as me?

No, never experienced such a problem. But I think my situation is different. The neighbors probably know that I'm a tourist staying in a short term rental apartment and, given my age (over 50) and the girls' age (usually under 25), they certainly guessed that they are not my girlfriends, but working girls.

Russians are very real and emotional which can sometimes seem rude and abrupt. Americans and British are more fake. Germans and Scandinavians are more direct, which from American standpoint can sometimes seem a little rude. Back to Russians, they can be the warmest and kindest but are also capable of being the nastiest. I have been so overwhelmed by their kindness towards me, a total stranger, yet I have also been annoyed by their rudeness and corruption. You never know what you're gonna get in Russia. Guess that's what makes them so interesting.

It would be the same problem if I tried to seduce some of my beautiful students I suppose. At the beginning I thought that they (almost all girls) will naturally socialize with me as it was always like that in my previous teaching experiences abroad. But nothing happened. At the end of the lesson they leave the classroom without asking any questions. It is strange since French is their main subject and I am the only native in town. It would be in their interest to socialize with me, no? If I make propositions, especially after 6 months, I would look very desperate. I am the main culprit I know. I probably should have tried to socialize with them first during the first days but I thought mistakenly that it would be easier for them to approach me.

On the other hand I must fight this terrible loneliness (the only sms and calls that I receive on my mobile phone come from France!) and frustration, so I feel I have nothing to lose anymore. I can’t believe that I feel lonelier in Russia than in France with all those beautiful women around, especially after reading some of the amazing reports on this forum, but it is a crude fact. What would you advise me to do? I don’t like the bar/disco scene and I don’t have enough money for the pros so the only possibility for me would be to meet women during the day, but which lines could I use to start a conversation? Do you think it could be a real problem if some colleagues/students notice me approaching? As I wrote above, Briansk is like a big village so the probablity is high.

Your help would be very much appreciated!

Believe it or not, you're at a very enviable position. Lots of men would love to switch place with you. You're a Frenchman teaching French in an university in Russia where you're the only foreigher in town. All the stars are lined up for you. What more do you want? Be more confident and talk to girls after class. And try to learn Russian. You can offer to teach them French and ask them to teach you Russian in return at your place. Pretty soon you can expect them to put their tongues in the right places. Even some bozos from third world countries can score left and right in Russia. Are you really French? Come on, you can do this. Start asking girls out today.

That's why I said that HE should feel sorry for US, (and why I'll bet the whole story is BS).

If you think I am so lucky what are you waiting for to teach English in any Russian town for 200 dollars a month? It would be even much easier for you than for me as there is a huge need of native English teachers. You can come anytime, any Russian university would welcome you.

Unless you prefer to stay in your country, earning high wages and travel a few times a year in Russia, spending 200 Euros each evening for the chicks in the cities of your choice.On those conditions it is obviously much easier to score. I couldn't do that because even in France my salary is to low for that. So, who are the luckiest?

Utchitel, one thing you always have to remember is that the Russian dyevs expect you to make the first move. They may like you, and would welcome your approach, but you'll never know unless you find an opportunity to talk and find out. If you do not, for them, you are uninterested.

One good tip, because I swear it works, even if I myself had the "privilege" of being flamed by Bez for it several years back :-), is to find an occasion to give them a few flowers. These are not working girls. To us it sounds romantic and old-fashioned, but many of these girls ARE romantic and old-fashioned, having grown up in close Russian families with values we no longer know, and they get little of that sort of treatment from the local men. And as Doc Skank points out, they'll go surprisingly far once they are in the mood. It costs us little, but usually it's the first time they've ever received flowers in their lives. It's not coincidence that the internet dating sites do a sideline in selling flowers, teddy bears and whatever. It's clever marketing, and it increases your chances too.

8th March, Intl Women's Day, would have been an ideal opportunity, but you'll find others, if you delve a bit.

Gotta agree, sending flowers/etc via dating sites is a total waste of time/money.

However, in this guy's shoes, it may be a different scenario. In person, after knowing a girl, its different - I've been near slapped for not buying flowers on March 8 - no one in EE would take you for a tool for gifting any woman any gift on March 8. Any other day, and its another story....


Just the same, I don't know as though giving flowers would be the way to go - it would be really wierd. What is he supposed to do, go into class with a bouquet of flowers in hand, and say, "Natasha, please come to the chalkboard - I have a gift for you....".

Much better to be discrete, especially given the guy's personality. Just find a way to talk to a girl on her own, then suggest a language exchange - its perfectly viable, acceptable, and will inevitably end up in much more if you are interested in her.

One more point I could give Ychitel - girls there may seem a bit cold to you - but they'll be this way even if they like you - often, they just assume that they don't have a chance with you. Its up to you to let them know the door is wide open...

Street Sleuth, I would like to propose those kind of language exchange but in case of a refusal the girl will probably talk with her collegues about my proposal and I could very quickly get the reputation of the teacher who approach his students.That is the main reason of my passivity.

The safest way would be to ask to all the class that I need a language exchange but then I can't know who will answer. It is a real dilemma.

I think you're ignoring the original issue, dealing with Ychitel. His real issue is not what to do on a date, but how to get one in the first place!

Sure, once he has a date, he can give her flowers - but he has to have the date first....giving flowers to a girl prior to that would be just plain odd.

Okay, some advice he can actually use - if he's worried about working his student body the solution is easy. Just go to the next town or city during his down time, d'oh.
