I return to Bangkok next week after 3 or 4 years of not visiting the Capital, will a taximeter use the meter from BKK to Nana Hotel or is it a case of agreeing the fare beforehand?

If I remember right it should be in the 350-400 thb fare range to Soi 4.

TIA.[/QUOTE]I you go by meter is should be well under 300 Baht, maybe 250 at most (depending on traffic), given Soi 4 is not my typical destination. However if you add on the tollway charges will be more like 350 I guess.

I am sure if was late at night and a Thai passenger they would get off the expressway at Ekkamai or similar to avoid the tolls and possible end up with a cost of well under 250 Baht.

I have not had a taxi not use the meter from airport in recent memory. I get a taxi from departure level to save airport 50 Baht surcharge and save time. Key point is not to go with a driver that is not sitting in his taxi. The more the guy pursues me, the more I don't want him. Just can't be bothered with the hassle of haggling with him over a price. The drivers sitting in the taxi when I approach, will just turn on the meter automatically.

Maybe it is not same for everyone. I speak Thai (could make a difference).

Well known Japanese customers will walk straight in, I am quite sure. They just decide which customers they don't wish to alienate.

Personally I don't want to buy a drink before seeing if there is a good seat available on the first floor. Upstairs girls just don't cut it for me. Same applies at Crazy and Shark. I am not going to be relegated to upstairs.

Generally speaking, the overall reason for the door man or servers at Bacarra to point to the outside bar when you approach the doorway indicating you need to buy a drink first is because they "want" you to buy one before you go inside, walk around looking for a seat on the lower flioor, not find one, not want to go upstairs (as you don't), and accomplish nothing for the bar except bottle neck the aisle and block the view of others while you circle the bottom floor stage and eyeball the girls. They "want" you to have already bought a drink so you will resign yourself to at least taking a seat in an otherwise undesirable location until you finish it. Meanwhile, you might buy another or spot a girl worthy of a Lady Drink anyway.

In that regard it isn't generally about skin color or desirable customers vs undesirable customers.

But "wanting" isn't the same as "getting" and they will certainly ignore that expectation for some. Simply recognizing you as a regular, reliable customer might be enough for the doorman to let you in without buying a drink first while others are required to.

I don't believe I fit the ethnic or skin color profile to be considered a potential waste of their space or whatever but I have been directed to the outside bar to buy a drink first on busy nights there. But several times I have just looked at the doorman a moment, smiled, and when or if he recognizes me as a customer who has been dropping in from time to time for years he gestures for me to go right in.

I arrived yesterday, Oct 10 midday. I was expecting closures for the Kings Funeral. I was surprised that even the 7-11's and Family Marts closed. Bangkok was eerily quiet late last night and early this morning. Sukhumvit was dark and deserted. Tonight Soi Cowboy and probably Nana, remain closed. (A few of the Soi Cowboy bars were having repairs done.) Many business remain closed. But the massage parlors on Soi 23 are open. Luckily, I have contacts in Bangkok. One has come over and is keeping me company. Hopefully, the debauchery returns to normal tomorrow.

About five of us are going to Asia for the first time (some first time leaving the US) and have been doing a lot of research. The one thing we're not sure about is pricing. We are inexperienced and have saved a bit so are trying to messing up the local economy by over paying (too much. I'm sure we'll get scammed at least once).

I've found some prices for BJ / HJ bars. I think we'll start here as it seems pretty organized and simple and we have no idea what we're doing.

These should be 500 for HJ and 1000 baht for BJ.

-Toy Bar.

-Wood Bar.

-Magic Table.

If we go to any of the bars / strip clubs on Soi Cowboy and want FS then the breakout is:

LD: 150.

Barfine: 500 - 1000.

FS: 2,000 for ST.

Quick question here: At a stripclub / gogo bar if we just want a BJ do they have rooms or do we have to leave the spot?

When we head to the islands is it easy to tell which massage places are FS?

We are heading there in Dec so it'll be awhile but I'll do a full report.

If that happens, then you need to be firm, nice, smile, and say "meter". Some ex-pats I've met complained they've been ripped off at the airport. I've have always gotten them to use their meters. Although these days, I've read that the Thai authorities have taken steps to reign in these rip off taxis. The percentage of rip off taxis should be less than previous years.

You taxi fare range is close. It is 50 baht surcharge (for the official taxis), plus 2 tollway charges, plus 200 something on the meter.

You can avoid the 50 baht surcharge by going upstairs to the arrival level, but they've installed one way turnstiles (is it still there?) Then you have to hop over a short fence with your luggage, which I refuse to do.

If traffic is light, you can avoid the tollway charges and have a smaller meter charge by going up Sukhumvit (I think via Rama IX). It will take a little longer though. With heavy traffic, it will take a lot longer. I tried that once, but the taxi driver played dumb and asked, "how do I get there?" WTF! Taxi driver wants to go via the tollways because it's faster with higher meter charges.

You can save money and use the airport rail link. But you still have to take a taxi from the rail station. After a 22 hour flight, I don't like to do that.

Note: if you take the taxi via the tollways, you will turn left into Sukhumvit (Thais drive on the left hand side). Quickest way to get to Nana hotel is to make the taxi stop at the intersection of Sukhumvit/Soi Nana, and cross the street and walk about 100 meters to your hotel. If you want the taxi to drop you off in front of your hotel, you need to make a detour due to the no right turn rule and all the way one streets. I believe there is a short detour which goes through a hospital parking lot, and a long detour path which you arrive via Soi Nana from the other side. Some taxi drivers might try to take that really long detour.

Are Indians still denied entry into Baccarra? Or are they charged cover charges?

The guarantee place will be the Eden Club. PSE effort. But the problem is that the girls are older and marginal looking. You will have to pay extra to take the girls to your hotel room.

Also, you should be able to get the girls to do lesbian stuff at the PSE massage parlors, such as Tulip and Snow White. Just ask before you choose the girls. Problem is most of the girls will be marginal looking.

For younger, cuter girls, you should go to the go-go bars. You will probably need to talk to many girls. Maybe ask the mamasan. Make sure you ask all the right questions. Problem is that some of the girls will say yes at the bar, and not perform at the hotel room. You just have to keep on doing it, until you find your list of submissive girls.

[/QUOTE]I'm a white guy who has been waved in without buying a drink outside on busy nights when others are directed to the outside bar to buy one first, even East Asians. But the doorman still tries to send me over to the outside bar first. I don't know for sure if they (there is more than one doorman, of course) change their mind and wave me in anyway because they recognize me as an occasional customer or simply because I stand there for a moment thinking it over and appear to be about to change my mind about going inside at all. But they often do change their mind. I am fairly certain it has nothing to do with whether or not I am known to buy a lot of drinks inside because the doormen would probably never know that. But they would have seen me enter several times previously and sometimes walk out with a barfined girl.

There are times when I don't bother with the stand-off and just buy a drink outside anyway. In some ways it is more convenient to do that and offers its own rewards. I will get a drink much faster, be able to control the payment and a reasonable tip issue, no monkey business with that, and I find that holding a drink in your hand when the place is packed gives you a visible ticket to roam on foot from area to area and level to level without having to deal with the sit here, sit here, sit here insistence from the servers who want to be the one to bring you a drink and get a tip.

Another thing is, I think the idea of only wanting a seat on the first level in places like Baccara and Crazy House is a somewhat silly concern and, in my experience, misses a rather obvious better use of the higher levels if scanning and engaging the talent up close and personal to decide if you want to barfine one is your primary goal in entering that bar (that would generally be me) rather than sitting there for a long time buying several drinks (that would almost never be me). The upper levels in those bars is where the lady's toilet is located. If you find yourself relegated to those upper levels due to the crowd, just position yourself near where virtually every girl in the joint will pass by or well within your view on her way to or from the toilet and throw the most interesting ones a big smile and nod. There is no rule forbidding the girls dancing on the lower level stage from chatting with a customer on the upper level in this way, or even sitting for a Lady Drink if that is necessary to chat further.

For instance, it is difficult to check out the girls behind the front row of the onstage line up on the lower level of Baccara. But not when they come down from that stage and walk right past you sitting on a couch on the upper level on their way to and from the toilet. And you know the bit in the bars, particularly infamous in Crazy House, where you buy the girl a Lady Drink as soon as she gets off the stage, she takes a sip and says, "I go to toilet, hon", but you never see her again except after she has donned her street clothes and is on her way out the door with some other dude? Well, the upper level where the toilet is located is where you can turn out to be that other dude, maybe without buying her a Lady Drink at all. LOL. I have met, engaged in chat and barfined Baccara and CH girls from the lower level stages that way. More than once or twice.
