Apparently it is in the Terms of Service that although they offer free international data roaming, it is not intended to be done on a regular basis. That is, for vacations or short trips, you should be fine. But for longer stays, they can potentially discontinue your service, and you will still be charged for your plan, but unable to use it.

This year I stayed in Colombia for three months, and the phone worked perfect for the first two months. In the third month I received the following message:

"As a reminder, Fi's Terms of Service require you to use our service primarily in the United States (territories not included), and it looks like you've been predominantly using Fi abroad. In 30 days, we'll need to suspend your international roaming data capabilities unless you start using Fi in the United States again (territories not included). Your calls and texts will not be impacted."

Fortunately, my was trip ending in less than 30 days, so using the phone in the US again was not a problem. But next year I plan on traveling for nine months, so it may be problematic. I plan to use local SIMs to supplement my Fi plan, with the hope that low data usage will lead them to not turn off data while I am traveling. (Note: You can still use data while on WiFi, you just won't be able to use data over mobile networks.).

In any case, just a caveat to keep in mind, for those of you doing prolonged stays. Otherwise, Google Fi has worked great for me.
