[QUOTE=Amavida]Been here only a couple of years full time now. Gotta say its no more dangerous than any other big city. Ermita / Malate is a pretty seedy area at night so a little common sense should be used. Situational awareness goes a long way toward personal safety. Walking along the footpath you come across several street people crowding a narrow section what do you do? A) Try to pass between them excusing your self politely or B) Step out on to the roadway well in advance & give them a wide berth?
Correct answer is B. Just observe how the locals instinctively do this.
Walking the streets you are offered a ride by several trike drivers, when you decline they curse you & insult you. Do you A) give them a mouthfull back & get into a verbal altercation or B) Swallow your pride, ignore their taunts & move away quickly but smoothly.
Correct answer B.
You need extra cash from an ATM for that unexpected freeby. Do you A) head to the nearest machine & stick your card in. Or B) look for a machine in an open well lit public area & check no one is loitering/observing?
Correct answer B.
I dont walk about fearful but i do automatically & calmly think about what i am doing.

Excellent tips. In addition to using your common sense and situational awareness, your context is important as well. That is, how are you showing yourself? Are you drunk? Moping about the sidewalk because the honey you wanted got away? Not good. Walk with purpose and know where you are going. Always look around so you're letting the bad guys know they won't be able to sneak up on you. Also keep your hands in or close to your pockets when moving through crowds. If you have to use a jeepney, try to sit toward the exit and be aware of everyone on board. I'm not built, I'm rather slender, but while I've had to defend myself against pickpockets on rare occasions (no substitute for awareness there), I've never had a real problem, knock on wood, and I've been in some really dodgy areas around the world.
One more tip: when walking on the sidewalk, don't walk next to the buildings, especially if you can't see into the nooks that provide potential hiding places.
